Early morning on Monday June 1st 2026, multiple thunderstorms developed on the northwest side of the Kansas City Metro. These cells eventually congealed, and became a supercell. The supercell thunderstorm split, sending the leftward large hail producing supercell into northern Clay County MO and southern Clinton County MO. The right split tracked across the north side of the Kansas City Metro, through the city of North Kansas City in southern Clay County, and impacted portions of Kansas City Missouri in far northern Jackson County near downtown. The strongest winds occurred in North Kansas City Missouri, with several large trees knocked down, along with an 82 MPH wind gust recorded at the downtown airport (KMKC). Although there was rotation with the storm, there is no evidence the rotation ever reached the ground. Therefore, all damage with this supercell was associated with either straight line winds along the rear flank downdraft, or downburst winds within the heavy precipitation core. .06/01/2026 North Kansas City and Downtown Wind Event... Peak Wind: 82 MPH (KMKC ASOS) 1:38 AM CDT Start Date: 06/01/2026 Start Time: 1:28 AM CDT Start Location: North Kansas City, MO Start Lat/Lon: 39.165/-94.585 End Date: 06/01/2026 End Time: 1:42 AM CDT End Location: East of Downtown Kansas City, MO End Lat/Lon: 39.123/-94.528 The NWS sent a survey team to North Kansas City, MO, in southern Clay County to examine the large tree damage across the area. The damage pattern did not show a tornadic damage pattern, but rather, damage consistent with strong downburst winds between 75 MPH and 82 MPH. There was also straight line wind damage along the rear flank downdraft surge. Note that the above start and end times, along with start and end locations, only represent the swath of winds over 75 MPH. Damaging winds under 75 MPH did occur further southeast as the supercell thunderstorm exited the Kansas City Metro, including wind damage in parts of Independence Missouri. && NOTE: The information in this statement is preliminary and subject to change pending final review of the event and publication in NWS Storm Data. $$ Krull
