Hi all

I am looking at moving up to Manchester within the next 6 months,
house sale allowing and am needing to find a job.

I'm a relatively experienced Rails developer and Ruby focused sysadmin
(just over 2 years and counting in the Ruby world, although I've been
a *NIX and system admin type for a lot longer) and I'm currently
working for a tech startup (ish) in London who uses Ruby exclusively.

We're agile, although we don't follow a set process, mostly picking
chunks of Scrum, XP and lean/kanban as it fits out work processes. We
retrospect and have daily standups.

Being from a small team (6 full time devs plus 2 pure designers) I'm
used to doing a lot of front end dev as well as back end Railsy stuff.

I'm really just testing the water at the moment, I don't really know
of many places outside the London tech circle and really want to find
out who's around and who's hiring in the near future.

I'm going to be coming up to manchester soon (probably early Nov) so
if you fancy a coffee or a beer give me a heads up.

Apologies for the vagueness, I work with some folks from Burnley area
(who I haven't mentioned anything to yet) and I'm not sure if they're
still on the list ;)

cheers

Matt

Stardotstar may still be hiring,
http://stardotstar.com/company/news/we-want-you-as-a-new-recruit and
On The Beach seem to be continually looking for devs. Other people may
know of other positions.

I'm out of the country for the first 2 weeks of November, but there
will often be people interested in coming out for a beer. You might be
interested in the #nwrug channel on irc.freenode.net if you use IRC.
We have meetings every month on the third Thursday, next is a curry
night:

Do you have a twitter presence?

If you whack me over your CV off list I'll forward it onto Jonathan

Lizette,

Given that OTB hire both via recruiters and also directly maybe you
could outline the benefit someone would have of going through you
rather than direct, other than earning you a commission that is.

Or you could contact someone who works there directly and cut out the recruiters. There are plenty of people on this list who work at in the beach. I'm sure someone can help you out.

As if any potential employee with half a brain would go through someone that will cost the employer *more* to hire them (or cost the same with reduced salary), having been given the option to contact the company directly.

On the other hand, OTB can just rule out anyone from the list that does come through you as not having more than half a brain…

And as a reply somewhat on-topic, we're always on the look out for good sysadmins or rubyists over at Brightbox. See http://www.brightbox.co.uk/about/jobs for more details. We're based in Leeds, but work from home for the most part. :)

I don't have any respect for recruiters 'hanging out' in channels like this sniping on developer conversations, asking for a CV, deleting the contact details and then forwarding to the client in question take a 25% slice of the salary for the cheek of it.

Yes there are better, legitimate, and more genuine ways to make an honest living from recruitment, this is not one of them.

Sorry to vent :/

It was a little harsh, but using the "I can make money at it"
justification for doing something is pretty weak, you could use the
same excuse for a number of activities such as "Spammer" or "Bank
Robber". It doesn't make it OK.

I take it that they don't have much of a rep around?

Are there any recruiters here people would recommend? I ask as I would prefer not to use them, but as I don't know the area a decent recruiter could be a godsend.

The guys that got me my current position were amazing for instance :)

I'd have a think about looking into surround tech scenes in Manchester
too.

There's definitely a lot more recruitment going on in the Java area
for instance.
Groovy on Grails / Seam stuff all seem to be making the platform a
little more competitive again.

List hijacking from the java guy? ;)

In all seriousness I'm not as adverse to the idea as some rails guys I know but I have approaching 0 commercial Java XP and certainly none that's web related so as I don't want to start at the beginning again that may not be the best plan

Well, to be honest, Manchester (and the North West) has seen a large increase in ruby jobs, and this is a good thing.
So, it's likely that more and more recruiting companies and recruiters will want to engage with the community. Also a good thing.
Some will spam. And this is a near perfect example, and others will not spam - WEHAY.

It should be easier for people to find roles, and for companies to recruit. NWRUG can play a part in that, and perhaps even benefit from sponsorship of events as well as helping members find new roles in the region. As well as booze, perhaps we could even afford to bring in speakers from outside the region with more sponsorship. WEHAY.

Obviously, we do things our own way, but this may form some good inspiration for what we could do in this area: http://readme.lrug.org/

Have a great weekend all,
Ian.

I agree Ian, its great to see more RoR moving north.  I'm not an agent, but an ex Microsoft developer who jumped to RoR a little while ago and looking to start an onshore team, it comforting to know my new growing skill set will have a place in our locality.  Recruitment without an agent is proving harder than expected (perhaps our locality), I have a lot of contact from agents, but little from developers so perhaps some rules of engagement would have proven useful (if they could be found easily).

Plans are afoot. In fact Will, Tekin and I were discussing this very thing on Basecamp a few days ago.

Any suggestions on how we can help you would be fantastic. We (organisers) need to know who is hiring, who is looking, who wants to sponsor and who wants to talk.

I've always found that attending the meetups has helped me find work. I've built up relationships with lots of other Rubyists which help for referrals and recommendations.

Thanks Ben, i definitely feel out on a limb from the perspective of jumping to Rails (alone) and recruiting someone, ill get my self over to some meetups and embarrass myself with RoR knowledge :-) (either NWrug or Shrug).

I’m not anti-using agents, but coming from a dev background and been a Yorkshire lad I feel I should be able to find someone myself - I really want to see RoR boom up here, and it seems to me to be a great time.

In all honesty i'm not sure what to suggest; we could start by geeking out and writing stories for the forum (but i fear too many cooks!).  Ultimately perhaps this is the wrong place for Agents and companies looking to recruit - should there be a NWRUG-Jobs?

Look forward to meeting you Ryan. Ultimately, we're all learning something :)

Seems to be a convention on LRUG of prefixing a recruitment related post with [JOBS]
(Though on a quick scan through my LRUG folder I see [JOB] also occurs.)
So, that'd be filterable outable if people would like to do so.

Perhaps that would be a reasonable thing to adopt/refer to in our FAQ/About?
Probably plenty of other aspects that could in there too :) Happy to help if needs be.
