Hi guys,

You may remember me posting about freelance rates a week or two ago.
Well unfortunately that fell through :(

Can anyone help me compile a list of companies that do Ruby on Rails
work in Manchester and the surrounding area. Maybe ones that work with
freelancers.

My current list is: Star Dot Star, Setfire Media and On the Beach.

Also any leads you could throw my way would be great
(bena...@gmail.com) No recruitment consultants please! or if you
need the services of a good Ruby developer check out http://benaldred.co.uk/hire-me

I'll see you at the MagRails social on Thursday

cheers,

Ben

Hi Ben

We (On The Beach) are after full time Ruby devs ideally. If you're
interested in an interview then drop me your cv.

Cheers,
Sean

We do work with people on a contractor basis but not sure what this recruitment drive is looking for. I suspect they'll consider contracting if you spend a set amount of days per week in the office.

We're currently only seeking permanent employees rather than contractors.

Hey Ben,

Should be able to tell you about the consulting related role on
Thursday - though it is multi-language & permie so may not suite, but
it is central Manchester based and includes RoR.

I'm guessing you know about the beeb Cucumber / test related role.
That looks like it might get advertised very soon.

There's also the sweat equity oppurtunity for equity role I mention -
though I'm guessing you've got travel debts to pay off, so that still
may not suite.

Oh Bytemark were advertising for a Ruby role too: http://t.co/QPDKhH3

Have you thought about teaming up with another freelancer and
approaching some of the bigger stateside outfits and seeing if they'd
outsource to a team in Manchester? Or closer to home there's some
companies in London that seem over worked, so I could put you in touch
with those I know down that way, and maybe they'd be ok with you up in
Manchester most of the time - London's only 2 hours on the train these
days after all :) Perhaps one of the Startup Milk Roundabout opps
could be done with a.n.other up in Manchester?

Hth helps - I know Sam is also looking for a role that may include
Ruby, so perhaps he can update you after his search is complete as
well :)

Seriously? That list is rather short. Laughably short considering the use of Ruby I know of in the North West.

We (Stratajet) are going to be looking in a month or two for full-time roles (we're doing another funding round at the moment), and I know Bytemark are currently looking:

I also know of about a dozen agencies that use Ruby regularly (and will use freelancers) and at least a dozen more companies that are currently fully staffed.

More importantly though, why look just in the North West? There has been a huge number of Ruby jobs out there that are up for telecommute, and if you're a late riser I can confirm that working to EST hours can be quite comfortable. :-)

Also, don't discount oDesk - unlike many sites in that niche, decent rates are available and there is plenty of work. I particularly would encourage doing the Ruby "test" (it's easy to get in the top 20%) and then you can normally pick up work at £200-£300/day equivalent rates without too much work. It'll take you a couple of weeks of applying to get something, but you will almost certainly get something.

I'd also advise having a few copies of your CV with you if you're going to Magrails this week and that you work the room a little.

Either way, I know there are far more than 3 companies in the whole of the North West using Ruby, and *way* more opportunities than the three you have identified if you're prepared to think a bit creatively!

Which could be done from our office in Hulme if desired!

Patrick - I was looking for a freelance job really, have you put the job up on the geekup jobboard? http://jobboard.geekup.org Not sure how good it is.

Paul - Sorry my list is so small and laughable. I just don't know who does Ruby around the Northwest. I am sure there are many opportunities, but I have been out of the country for 6 months+ and am not as 'in the know' as other people on this list. Hence why I was asking here.

I may investigate your tip about oDesk and unfortunately I cannot make MagRails, but I will be at the NWRUG social with CVs

Hi Ben. My company (Swirrl) has used Rails freelancers in the past for bigger projects. I don't need anyone right now, but might do if some stuff comes off - let's chat at the NWRUG social tomorrow :)
