Hello,

Is anyone using Ember JS or know anyone who is? I'm trying to see if
it's worth starting a user group for those in the Manchester area or
if there is one that already exists. Sometimes feel like I'm the only
person using it around here for a real world application but I'm sure
that can't be the case.

Cheers,

Ian

I know Fatsoma use Ember. You may be best talking to Martin Rue who runs manc.js - http://mancjs.com/ not sure if he is on this list?
He will probably know

Anyone using React and RoR?
Would be really handy to get an intro :)

Perhaps that'd even be a great talk at NWRUG?

One of my mates uses React at his work but I think its on a Java or .NET based backend. But I guess that doesn't matter as its all HTTP

I'm doing a lot of work deploying Discourse (Ember/Rails based forum app) for various companies and in the process of fulfilling unusual customer requirements I'm having to delve deeper in the code, mostly on the Rails side, but a couple of times it would have been great to understand the Ember side too.

I'd be very interested to join in on some Ember meetups, although I am a total Ember beginner, and not at all confident with JavaScript.

If there's no space to run these Ember meetups at MadLab/NWRUG then I'm happy to offer the venue of Leigh Hackspace (www.leighhack.org).

Hello,

I would be interested to know what bits of ember caught you out. I
guess I should start a mailing list, don't want to hijack NWRUG! I've
started a twitter account @embermanchester in the meantime. Madlab
have said that their building is usable except the ground floor. Ideas
for things to talk about very welcome. No speakers needed but its nice
to kick the conversation off.

Cheers,

Ian

Not so much 'caught out' as I really haven't a clue where to start!
I have been super busy lately so haven't had chance to get a book and hit the tutorials
Any recommendations?

Hello,

Not sure what guide to recommend. The one on emberjs.com has
disappeared although it was months out of date anyway. Perhaps the
twitterverse can recommend some. Any new ember user will have to
understand http://www.ember-cli.com/ which is the new way to structure
and build apps.

Cheers,

Ian

I don't know how others feel about this but I am not much of a fan of having a specific Ember meet up. There is a great JS group already meeting in Manchester and they are more than happy to welcome new talks and invite new people along.

We tried having a separate Node.js group in Leeds but it took about a year to realise that in the end it is all JavaScript so it merged with the existing JS user group.

I think you would benefit more to be proactive in the current JS community than create your own. They would get a lot more out of it also!

Cheers

Richard

I can certainly understand that sentiment (for keeping Ember discussions in the JS group) and I think it probably sensible in that Ember is JS so should belong in the JS camp.

The reason for the apparent feeling that Ember is in some way 'diferent' from other JS stuff is a strange one in that Ember has a lot of ties with the Ruby community (Yehuda Katz was member for Rails core team IIRC) and from what I've heard Ember feels more 'natural' to Rubyists/Railsites than other JS front end frameworks, so maintains a small cadre of converts despite being less popular than Angular and React. In the process of doing a bit of reading about Ember recently I've even encountered suggestions that it would be tied closer with the Opal .rb to .js 'transpiler' which would mean both the front end and the back end could be written in Ruby.

I guess the problem for me about following discussion on a JS group is that the signal to noise ratio would be very low (lots of talk about other JS stuff and not much about Ember)

Hello,

Thanks for the discussion. I think at the moment there might be more traction in bringing Ember to the current JS community in Manchester/the NW. Then if there is a lot more interest something separate could go ahead. Anyone interested in some Ember chats/demos at the local JS or RUG?

Cheers,

Ian

Hello,

So I had another think and MadLab will be hosting the first Ember Manchester on 29 June. Probably 6.30 - 8PM. The theme will be around getting started and migrating older apps. If anyone from NWRUG can provide some advice on how to best run these things that would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Ian

OK cool. Mondays are a regular Leigh Hackspace night for me so I'm unlikely to make it to MadLab, but do have a good time.
