I'm going to try really hard to have this SoundCard Modem software
running at the Summer Gathering. Primarily it'll be on 30 meters but
it would be very cool to give it at try at 2400 or 4800 on 2 meters...
Will anybody else have the soundcard modem hardware there to
experiment on the faster speeds?

Subject: [ca_aprs] Yet Another Version of UZ7HO Soundmodem Released (Ver 0.50)
To: CA APRS <ca_...@yahoogroups.com>

After a lull of many months, Andrei now seems to have resumed very
active development work on the Soundmodem again. A new version .50b of
this drop-in replacement for the AGWpe soundcard soft TNC has been
released, as of 04 September 2013, just days after ver .49 .

As usual, it can be downloaded from my website at:

<http://wa8lmf.net/miscinfo>

Scroll about 3/4ths of the way down the list of downloadable stuff and
look for "UZ7HO-Soundmodem-Install-Ver-0.50-Beta.exe". Note that
unlike the version on Andrei's own website at:

<http://uz7ho.org.ua/packetradio.htm>

that is a single .EXE file contained in a zipfile, the package on my
site is a full-blown Windows "wizard"-type installer that
automatically creates a program folder, entries in the Windows Start
Menu, and includes several readme files & a User Manual in .PDF form.

__________________________________________________________

Updated changelog now shows:

SCM v0.50b changes:
- Added single bit recovery feature
- Fixed transmission non-AX.25 frames to application (see option
"NonAX25Frm" in the INI file)

SCM v0.49b changes:
- Improved RX-part of the modem (improved ATC and added interpolation)
- Improved DCD for 1200 and 2400 bauds
- Fixed some bugs in the AX.25 L2-layer protocol
- Expanded features for non-standard AX.25 frames for SAT-operations.

SCM v0.45b changes:
- Added "6dB Pre-Emphasis filter" option.
Pre-Emphasis filter it's a high-pass filter that emphasizes the high
frequencies in the audio spectrum. Preemphasis increases the level of
high frequencies by 6dB per octave. It might help to receive signals
at 1200 and 2400 bauds if the frequency response of the receiver is not
a "flat".
- Added "UTCTime" option for indicate the time in UTC format. (1=On / 0=Off)
- Added "NRMonitorLines" option for limit number of lines "Monitor"
window (10-65535).
- Improved compatibility with the AGWPE and MixW AX.25 Protocol
(reduction of REJ collisions)
and fixed some small bugs.

SCM v0.44b changes:
- Added "ExcludeCallsigns", "ExcludeAPRSFrmType" options for blocking
unwanted traffic.
- Changed sound output in the SCO mode (now works in mono).
- By default, software is configured for single port.
- Added 2400 baud modem in the list.

SCM v0.43b changes:
- Some changes in L2-protocol

SCM v0.42b changes:
- Fixed bug for outgoing connection with unregistered callsigns.
- Added color monitor.
- Changed AX.25 parameters in INI file for each channel.

SCM v0.41b changes:
- improved control of DCD.

SCM v0.40b changes:
- Fixed bug in SABM and DM frames.
- Modified format of the frames for AGW monitor (more compatible with
original AGWPE).

I have some surplus 2m radios and I'd be willing to spin an adapter board to make connection easy.

I'll bring one for further discussion.

Cool...

They say this DIRE WOLF TNC and APRS server would run on a PI - I bet
that means it'll go on an UDR56K..

I tried Dire Wolf with a cheap USB sound card ($9) and I was not able to get
any tones out of it.

The same USB card does work under Windows just fine. I suspect the drivers.
With the same drivers, my Microsoft LX-3000 headset works fine. I just chose
not to cut it up.

The author used the Tigertronics Signalink USB which is more than I wanted
to spend.

I have not purchased a different USB sound card yet but have been looking at
the Behringer device of which I don't remember the part number but it was a
model with low latency.

Best regards,
Fred N7FMH

From WB2OSZ:
Dire Wolf version 0.8 is almost ready.

This one?

http://wa8lmf.net/ham/uca202.htm

I've picked up a couple iMic's due to WA8LMF's reviews and now he
comes out with one that's better yet...

That looks right. I had not read his review. Interesting.

Other models are the UCA222, UFO202 and UFO222.

I haven't given up on the project, but I also haven't picked it up since a
week or two before my vacation. I hope to continue in October.

Howdy from Bill K7MT in Helena,

Is there a NW APRS server on line so I can connect to it with my Igate?
Also, is there a new list of APRS Servers available as I can only get one on
my list to work. All the others are not working !!!

Thanks for help in advance.

Oh, CHILL is back operational near Anaconda, Mt. Some one decided they
needed a VHF antenna so they stole the one from the site hooked to the Chill
Digi !!! Must have been desperate for sure !!!

All the servers in the Tier 2 APRS network are listed at:

http://www.aprs2.net/serverstats.php

The two "Northwest" servers are:

oregon.aprs2.net (T2OREGON)

and

northwest.aprs2.net (T2USANW)

northwest.aprs2.net is running out of a data center in the Seattle area.

oregon.aprs2.net is located in a data center in Corvallis, Oregon.

For best performance, use noam.aprs2.net. This will connect you to one
of many APRS servers in North America. It chooses from a list based on
functionality (broken servers are automatically removed from the list
within a few minutes) and load (favors servers with lower connections
/ max-connections).

Hi Keith,

Do I have to set a filter if I log into NWAPRS or Oregon Server !!! Or is
traffic filter just for our region??? If I have to set a filter, I am not
sure how that is done. I have readup about filters for the Tier2 but cannot
find good instructions on how to set a filter ??

Cheers Bill K7MT

Here is the documentation for APRS-IS server filters:
http://www.aprs-is.net/javAPRSFilter.aspx

The easiest thing to do is something like m/300. This gives you data
within 300km of your last position. Note that this only works after
you've sent a position!

If you don't want to mess with your own filters, you can use one of
the pre-defined filter ports on northwest.aprs2.net. Port 14577 will
give you roughly WA, OR, ID, MT, WY, BC, AB, and NWT.

What kind of hardware do I need? I have an FT817 running the .50 beta code using a Signalink and Windows 8.

Please excuse me if these sound like dumb questions but I have only dabbled in digital stuff but it seems to have great potential for the public service work I do.

Thanks Tom,

That really helps. It is exactly what I was looking for to help eliminate
any excess. Cool !! I will change that to port 14577.

Where are the predefined filters and their ports for Northwest.APRS2.net and
Oregon.APRS2.net so I can set the one for Oregon also ??

Cheers Bill

You can find the port list on the status page (port 14501).
Pre-defined filter ports are non-standard, so I wouldn't expect to
find them everywhere. However, it looks like T2OREGON supports the
same ports as T2USANW:
http://oregon.aprs2.net:14501/

These ports wont "eliminate any excess" as you suggest. The default
(blank filter) will be mostly quiet, only sending you messages addressed
to stations you have igated. This is ideal for a headless igate.
Filters are useful with mapping programs to see stations on the map
that are outside of your RF reception range.

Hi Tom,

Well it finally sunk in !!! 14501 shows everything about the APRS2 server.
I just woke up Hee Hee !!!

Getting old is ok but it some times has its drawbacks !!!

Thanks

You are currently connected to T2WESTTN. Looking at the status
page, you are connected with APRS+SA 2.28 but not using any filter.

http://westtn.aprs2.net:14501/

You could grab an updated copy of filters.txt...

http://www.ui-view.org/~files/filter.txt

Connected on port 14580, you won't get anything from the server
without a filter unless there is a pre-defined filter. According to
the status page, port 14580 is a filtered port. You can certainly
connect without a filter, but if you want to get anything back from
the server add a filter. While you are deciding exactly what
you want to get, you could use a filter of m/250 for everything
within 250 km of your location... as long as you beacon a position.
