More accurately, has anybody tried a Chromebook with a USB to Serial
interface? That might make a great dedicated APRS thin client.

Thanks,

On the Kenwood D72 yahoo group there was some discussion about the
Airconsole.

If the Chrome has BLE or WiFi maybe you won't need the USB to Serial
interface.

I have one on my "buy soon" list.

It looks like Beagle Term provides a serial console within Chrome and all of the common adapters that work with vanilla Linux kernels should work.   That only gets you a serial terminal, though.   Someone would need to come up with an APRS client for Chrome with KISS support.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrome_OS

Around the same time, Google also announced that Chrome OS would gain the ability to run Android apps natively, by late 2014.

Beagle Term and comments on this wikipedia page are all encouraging.
Where Apple restricts some functionality it appears to be available
just out of sight on the Chrome devices..

It's also nice that some nearby stores (Walmart, Staples) have devices
on the shelf and the price is right....

From wikipedia page: "Shell access[edit]
Chrome OS includes the Chrome Shell, or "crosh", which documents
minimal functionality such as ping and SSH at crosh start-up. In the
older Chrome OS versions originally in Acer C710 no Bash-like shell
abilities were provided. In the newer Chromebooks such as Acer C720
bash is available from crosh, where the entire Linux filesystem can be
found and explored.
In developer mode, a full-featured Bash shell can be opened via VT-2,
and is also accessible via the crosh command shell.[55] To access full
privileges in shell (e.g. sudo) the root password is required; it is
"chronos" in Chrome OS and "facepunch" in Chrome OS Vanilla.[56]"

Thanks folks...
