Hi there Ray,

Let's keep this on the mailing list so that it might help other people.

1. What happens when you start with "nvpy --help"? If the right nvpy is being executed, you should see a message explaining how to use the --cmd command-line parameter. (I just want to see that nvpy is installed)

2. Is there anything up to date in your ~/.nvpy/nvpy.log ?

3. If 1 and 2 don't help, please try "strace nvpy" -- you'll see bunches of output, but the last few lines might tell us why nvpy is just hanging there not being useful.

See you,
Charl

Hi Charl,

nvpy worked great for years,
    (UBUNTU 12.04 32-bit + Python 2.7.3).

But after I upgraded to v.0.9.6, today:
       sudo pip uninstall nvpy
sudo pip install --upgrade --ignore-installed --no-deps nvpy

now, nvpy will not start at all.

Tried typing: nvpy in Terminal
and also clicking on the Desktop icon.

Nothing shows up,
even after several minutes wait...

I checked my home folder
and it has the file:
   .nvpy.cfg:
[nvpy]
sn_username = value ok ...
sn_password = value ok...

Help,  Charl!

Dear Ray,

Could you try doing: sudo pip install docutils

... and then try running nvpy again?

See you,
Charl

Hi Charl
   - thanks for the quick reply!

Q1:
What happens when you start with "nvpy --help"? If the right nvpy is being executed, you should see a message explaining how to use the --cmd command-line parameter. (I just want to see that nvpy is installed)

A1:
No, no message like that at all...
~$ nvpy --help

Q2:
Is there anything up to date in your ~/.nvpy/nvpy.log ?

A2:
Nope!
No nvpy.log entries for today Dec 23! = (today , after upgrade...).
Last most recent are all old entries,
from before the upgrade:

Q3:
If 1 and 2 don't help, please try "strace nvpy" -- you'll see bunches of output, but the last few lines might tell us why nvpy is just hanging there not being useful.

A3:
I pasted the output of "strace nvpy"
to Evernote:
(just click "> Skip" in the EV welcome window
    to see the note contents...)

thanks Charl!

(BTW, I find it very strange that it's missing docutils -- the nvpy pip install should have installed docutils automatically as one of the nvpy dependencies)

Err, sorry for the email storm... that's my bad. The command for upgrading states "--no-deps" (I'm sure there was a good reason for this long ago, but maybe not anymore)

After doing "sudo pip install docutils Markdown" you should be able to run nvpy as per usual.

Glad to hear it worked!

(sending to mailing list for future reference!)

OK!  did:

    sudo pip install docutils Markdown

then clicked on my nvpy desktop icon and...
nvpy appeared in all its (updated) glory!
THANKS!!👍

So, your thinking and diagnostic steps
were right on the mark, Charl!!!

Works great, pls remember to update this
in the nvpy instructions page?
https://github.com/cpbotha/nvpy/blob/master/docs/installation.rst#integrating-with-your-linux-desktop-environment

Charl, merry Christmas to you and family
and best for 2016!!
(from all your nvpy users!!...)
