On fait 50 nuances de Grey un trange procs : on lui reproche de reflter tristement son poque, de manquer d'ambition esthtique alors que sa forme trs populaire l'oblige faire avec la mdiocrit du matriau dont il est tir - soit le best-seller d'E. L James (50 Shades), fan-fiction o les rves d'une jeune fille candide (Anastasia) essaient de rinventer, coup d fouets, la figure du prince charmant . La critique, qui a accueilli le film trs frachement, n'a su que faire de cet objet mal foutu, d'abord labor dans l'ombre de Twilight et popularis sur des sites de fanfic. Elle n'a pu que plaquer sur lui un systme de rfrences issues de sa culture, citant Sade et Sacher-Masoch l o 50 nuances apparat avant tout comme le rcit d'un commerce sentimental. La destine de la femme n'est pas d'y tre comme la chienne ou la louve - mais plutt de grer ses plaisirs en contractualisant chaque aspect de sa vie sexuelle, selon une logique ultralibrale que le film suit trs sereinement, comme s'il nous racontait, pendant deux heures, un conte de fes.
Cette logique s'incarne dans une scne de deal assez remarquable, o il s'agit de signer un contrat de plusieurs pages. Eclair dans une lumire de soleil couchant, le couple Grey/Anastasia se transfigure ici en coentreprise - mais la douceur de la lumire, les tonalits un peu kitsch du dcor en font un moment d'idalisation, presque un dner romantique (des domestiques dvous se chargent de servir les deux parties durant la ngociation). Le contrat signer dcline la vie sexuelle en clauses dont les modalits sont ngociables: Anastasia peut rayer les mentions non dsires (le fist par exemple, ou le bondage). Entre la relation amoureuse et le contrat de travail, il n'y a strictement aucune diffrence: les clichs romantiques, traits comme tels, ne sont que les vestiges du roman sentimental l'ancienne, le romantisme dont nous parle le film est bien plus contemporain, tant dans son esthtique (essentiellement tlvisuelle) que dans son refus (jusqu' un certain point) du sentiment.
Personne ne s'est tonn de l'incroyable absence de moralit de 50 nuances. Lorsque Grey dit Anastasia: je te fouetterai autant que tu voudras, mais ne compte pas sur moi pour partager ton lit, il est loin d'apparatre comme un hros de comdie romantique, il n'a aucun idal amoureux, mais simplement des gots, exposs Anastasia lorsqu'il lui dvoile sa salle de jeux, un cabinet rempli de martinets et de cravaches. Tout le dessein du film - et il faut se demander jusqu' quel point il est srieux - consiste imposer la jeune fille une priode d'essai visant valuer sa capacit de soumission au sein de l'entreprise Grey. Soumission qu'il faut videmment prendre au sens mtaphorique: les scnes de flagellation (de la fesse aux coups de cravache) sont prudes et grotesques. 50 nuances n'est pas un Empire des sens amricain, c'est un film de Saint-Valentin, ne l'oublions pas.
