Theoption to play as one of two characters also further expands your gameplay options and makes it feel like you're getting two games in one. A large part of this is due to the fact that Corvo and Emily possess different abilities and play differently despite sharing a base skill set that includes sneaking, running, sliding and shooting. The older and wiser Corvo, for example, continues to play like a cooler version of the Pied Piper, retaining a lot of his classic Dishonored gameplay such as blink teleports, time manipulation and controlling rats. At the same time, he also gains new abilities like the ability to possess not just living people but corpses as well.
Emily, meanwhile, is no longer a mere damsel in distress, developing a unique repertoire of her own. Instead of a blink teleport, Emily possesses a Far Reach ability that acts like a rubber band, allowing him to fling herself toward foes or yank enemies toward her like a regal version of Spiderman. Her Domino ability, meanwhile, allows her to link the fate of several opponents to one enemy, allowing her to dispatch multiple bad guys in one fell swoop. She can also mesmerize foes with a Void Spirit or use Shadow Walk to turn into a shadowy figure that can attack foes. For misdirection, Doppelganger allows Emily to create a clone that can either distract foes, kill enemies or serve as a point for switching locations. Factor in skill trees for both characters and you can fine-tune your playstyle even more.
The choice in character, play style and various approaches to every situation encourages multiple playthroughs, which can range from 100 percent non-lethal to high chaos or even somewhere in between. The inclusion of a quick saving and loading mechanic will also be a godsend for certain players, especially if you decide to go for a less forgiving non-lethal approach for the entire game.
Overall, however, Dishonored 2 is worthy sequel that more than does justice to its predecessor. If you love action games that grant you lots of freedom and choice with gameplay such as such as Deus Ex: Human Revolution or Mankind Divided, for example, Dishonored 2 makes for a fun equation. (Note: This review is based on the Xbox One version, which was provided to us by Bethesda.)
The second time is definitely a charm for Dishonored 2, which builds on the solid framework of the original to create a bigger, better sequel. This includes more powers, more characters and a bigger playground filled with interesting missions layered with even more gameplay elements. Some of its villains feel a bit caricaturish and lovers of pure stealth might not like the lack of consequences from taking a more action-oriented approach. The freedom to choose your path and approach to gameplay, however, combined with fun mechanics make Dishonored 2 worth playing over and over and over again.
I'm currently a few missions deep into my second run through Dishonored 2, and I can comfortably say that it's my game of the year (though I'm one of the fortunate people to experience no technical difficulties, which helps.) The original is one of my favourite games and this is a worthy successor: a densely-featured stealth sandbox that warps itself effortlessly around the will of the creative player, an intricately-designed piece of clockwork to be toyed with, reconfigured, or broken according to your will.
I want to stress: there's absolutely nothing wrong with using these assists, and the majority of the game's qualities shine through with them enabled. But there's another Dishonored 2 waiting to be discovered if you're willing to make some tweaks in the 'gameplay' section of the options menu. The options you're given can be confusing, so here's a set of recommendations aimed at making the game harder, slower, and clearing out UI clutter to allow you to appreciate more of that phenomenal environmental art.
Without objective markers, you'll have to track down targets and key areas the old fashioned way. The game actually provides lots of tools to help with this, but you might not notice if you've become reliant on UI prompts. Often, missions will include pictures of key areas and you can use these as reference points. You can also unlock maps by finding them in the game world or, sometimes, buying them from black market stores. Navigating one of the game's labyrinthine mansions using a map is a much more satisfying challenge than relying on a marker.
The reason for this is simple: notifications are usually used to communicate information your character has gained but that isn't readily expressed in another way. The pickup log, for example, lets you know what the key you just picked up is actually for: something Corvo or Emily would know, but that you can't otherwise find out without digging into the journal.
Notifications also clarify what's expected of you in terms of the next step in a mission, but unlike markers they don't tell you where to go or exactly what to do. You're left with enough to figure out that the game remains a challenge, but disabling notifications entirely can result in a few too many trips to the journal to figure out exactly what it is that you're supposed to be doing.
Set crosshair style to 'simple' to replace the ornate regular crosshair with a simple white dot. Reduce its opacity to 50% to make it barely visible: you can still use it to precisely aim a crossbow bolt, but you won't really notice it the rest of the time.
That said, I recommend leaving 'display interaction' and 'display object highlighting' on. These don't make the game easier, they simply make it more obvious what you can interact with and what it is. Without them you'll have to employ a lot more guesswork, which tends to result in eating a load of rotten fruit for no reason just because you spammed the 'use' key near somebody's manky cabinet. Unlike other games of this type, Dishonored 2's object highlighting is actually relatively subtle and you'll be glad to have it when you're exploring a dark area packed with detail.

Arkane Studios' Dishonored hits store shelves on October 9. That day cannot come soon enough. Bethesda Softworks just debuted a new three-minute trailer on Game Trailers TV that focuses almost entirely on showing off the different styles of gameplay, including voracious rats eating a guard.
I fully expect Dishonored to be playable at E3. If that's the case, you can look forward to a full hands-on report right here on Game Informer in the coming days. In the meantime, enjoy this video, courtesy of Bethesda and Game Trailers.
The game is played from a first-person perspective and allows the player to undertake a series of missions in a variety of ways, with an emphasis on player choice. Missions can be completed through stealth, combat, or a combination of both. Exploring each level opens new paths and alternatives for accomplishing mission goals, and it is possible to complete all missions, eliminating all of Corvo's targets, in a non-lethal manner. The story and missions are changed in response to the player's violent actions or lack thereof. Magical abilities and equipment are designed to be combined to create new and varied effects.
Dishonored received positive reviews, focusing on the missions' individual narratives and the freedom available in completing them. The game won several awards, including the 2012 Spike Video Game award for Best Action-Adventure Game and the 2013 BAFTA award for Best Game, and was repeatedly recognized as the best action-adventure game of 2012 and one of that year's best games. It has also been cited as one of the greatest video games ever made. Dishonored was initially released in October 2012, for PlayStation 3, Windows, and Xbox 360, and was later supplemented with additional content focusing on the assassin Daud and his quest for redemption. PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the game were released in August 2015. Two narrative sequels, Dishonored 2 and Dishonored: Death of the Outsider, were released in 2016 and 2017 respectively, and the 2021 game, Deathloop, takes place within the far future of the Dishonored universe.
Dishonored is an action-adventure game played from a first-person perspective with an emphasis on stealth action and the use of gadgets and the environment to eliminate opposing forces.[1][2][3] The game world is a series of self-contained, mission-focused areas designed for multiple avenues of exploration in terms of in-game movement and powers.[2][4] Between missions, the player is taken to a central hub called the Hound Pits pub where the player character Corvo can meet with his allies, receive mission briefings and alternate objectives, and convert recovered loot into new equipment and upgrades.[4][5] In-game areas include loading docks, royal estates, poverty-stricken streets, and a bathhouse.[6] The player can save their progress anywhere, and the game includes a checkpoint save system. Saving is disabled during combat.[7][8] The game has four difficulty levels which modify the effectiveness of health and mana (magic) potions, and enemies' awareness, damage delivered, and responsiveness. In the easy setting, health regeneration is possible.[9]
