Board members and staff,
You approved spending $800 on radio advertisements for our enrollment
period. There was some discussion about using different radio stations.
Here is a comparison; please let me know what you want me to do. I will go
with the majority vote by next Tuesday.

Majic 99 (female listeners age 20-40)
65 60 second slots plus 10 10 second weather/sports sponsorships over a
four week period- we can have the students record their own words for the
ads- $800

WPSU (educated, more affluent listeners)
32 10 second spots ; we would rotate 3 different messages; played during
“drive time” news and information; we don’t record ourselves- $800

WISH 98.7 (office music- soft hits, less talk)
92 60 second spots; we can record our own- $800

Please let me know what you think. I don’t want to make this decision alone!

Carolyn,

I too vote for Majic99 if the choice is as presented.
I was wondering if we could split the ads between Majic99 and WPSU for less runs on each.

Prasenjit

Thanks for your quick response. Majic 99 had indicated that they didn't
want to put together the ad etc. for less than the $800.

Majic 99 seems to be best value. Margaret feels the same way.

Hi All,
I guess I will have to dissent, and vote for WISH 98.7. We actually
get more air time with 92 60-second ads, and the office-style format
may reach more of our targeted listeners. My daughter is also one of
their listeners.
Thanks,
Larry

I was not there at the meeting, so perhaps I missed something.

Who do we want to target? And how big is the radio station's audience?

It is more expensive to advertise on WPSU, but it may be effective as/if  it is reaching those we want to reach. If we are trying to reach their 500,000 listeners over center county! I don't know how many in State College and adjacent areas to compare with the other two stations.
And if WPSX allows us to use fewer slots, we can divert some money to other advertising venues- such as newspaper.

Other visibility/advertising suggestions:
  • Also, students can record their own words and we can perhaps have quotes and audio links off our website. People always go to the website, and they can hear and read what the students are saying about their school. This way, the students get a chance to record their thoughts/experiences.
  • Can we have a NOW ENROLLING board and brief contact info on the intersection of Atherton and Norma?
  • Would any local print media have an article about any of our events/school, for free, around the enrollment time period? The MLK day, whisper day, water cycle related field trips, any or all could be the theme?

  • Also, would we want to have brochures  and information about enrollment/lottery dates at Schlow library ? If we wanted to do more- have some kind of an outreach with music or craft or reading stories or a play, Anita Ditz, the children's  librarian is the person to contact. There is a suggested donation( used to be $25) for the community room.

Hi All,

Pallavi, you make some good points - some of those we did address at the board meeting - the advertising board on the Atherton corner (agreement made with Second Mile), and a new brochure has been drafted.

Your other comment regarding the children recording their own words is an extension of the original idea for making a radio ad - we all liked the idea that the ad for Majic or Wish could have our children as 'stars' - but you are right, whilst we should select the best 'sound bites' for the ad, we should make many more available on our website (with video even).  I have seen this approach to advertising on UK television.  We would present the ad saying something like ' The children at NVCS wanted to let everyone know how great their school is - we made this ad as part of an all school project here are some of their contributions - but go to NVCS.org to see/hear what everyone has to say...."

We could have video clips of teachers with students, students saying it in their own words (would often be too slow/rambling for a radio sound bite, but would work fine for a web based video clip).  I am aware that not all parents would want videos of their children on the web, but I would be fine with it (if I am the only one I guess we should forget this idea!).

So, I would like to support the proposal that we plan for a radio ad with children's voices - but that we expand that to video clips for the webstite and direct people there as part of the ad.  I agree with Larry and vote for Wish, but I don't have any experience of either station.

Cheers,
Nina
