I am sorry, folks. But I must have missed something here. I attended our last board meeting to help present Verna Etchells as a very qualified candidate for next year's first/second grade teacher. The board decided that some of the board members/parents of children in that class wanted to meet with her before approving Kara's recommendation for hire. If those board members were dissatisfied, it was agreed that we would post the opening and look for an alternative candidate. We went away as a committee with your mandate. We met with Verna for an hour and a half and then met after that to discuss our impressions. Every member of the committee was in favor of hiring her with no need to look further. We distributed the notes from our review via email and only received one comment and it was in the affirmative. A second board member agreed in person that we were to move ahead with hiring and the position was offered and accepted. Now, almost two weeks later, people are raising questions about their own decisions.  This is not an acceptable way to run an organization/ business. We always welcome parents'/ board members' input but it is not productive to raise doubts after the fact.

We have advertised for the special ed position per your mandate and are meeting with several candidates. We hope to have a recommendation for this position in the next week or two.

Please let me know if there is an issue here that I am unaware of.

I would also like to be informed of the purpose/agenda for the retreat and would expect to be invited as the founder of this school. My interests always lay with the children, as I am sure yours do.

Thank you for all of your time and care as members of the board. Our mission guides us and instructs us to look for what is best for each of your wonderful children.

Sincerely,

Carolyn Maroncelli

Thanks for the feedback.  I do also recall that our mandate was to interview Verna quickly so that if we needed to advertise the position, we would still have time to do that.  We didn't discuss a mandatory advertising period. Am I correct to assume that an offer has already been made to Verna?  If so, I'm not at all comfortable rescinding that offer so that we can advertise the position and interview other candidates.  I'd like to suggest that we proceed with the original plan and focus our efforts on hiring the best Special education teacher we can find.  If the PA Charter Law indicates that we need to advertise teaching positions, I'd also like to suggest that we plan on doing that for future hires.

Thanks,
Tricia

> Yes, an offer was made to Verna in good faith. She would be an exceptional teacher and addition to our staff.
