We say that they want to promote startup culture in our campus. We say that we want to make BITS the top 3 colleges in entrepreneurship in Asia by 2020. But all that is given to the students who decide to step out, take risks and start something of our own are hurdles even by our own college who promises us support. These are just the few we have had to face:

1.      1..  Last to last year we enrolled in NVC and worked very hard all through to get to the top and receive the Manoj Saxena Seed Fund. But even after almost two years we have not even received even half of the amount. On top that even after writing numerous mails to the faculty and alumni, I don’t even get a reply by them.

2.      2.  We all pride our college has a Technology Business Incubator (TBI). What nobody knows is that it is one of the poorest infrastructures that an incubator can have (Its literally falling apart). It’s a technical incubator but has limited and restricted internet which doesn’t work half the time. No mentors, no one to support us in making our financial tables, no legal support but we are expected to pay our rents properly on time.

3.       3. We had opened a PS1 station because thought that the best thing would be to give opportunities to BITSIANS to work in a startup. We upgraded our infrastructure to support the additional interns that cost us quite a lot. We gave a commitment to take up 6 students each year no matter what. We had one of the best projects including directly working on cloud space worth 1200 pounds/month. Many students were ready to take it up.  What we get in return is that our PS gets cancelled at the end moment without informing us and without a solid reason.

This is how we are going to promote our college and become the one of the best in nurturing students to open their own companies. If our own college pushes us back at every step how are we supposed to concentrate on the thing that really matters- our startup? It’s high time we start doing something about it or at least stop all the hype that we have created about startups if we can’t support them.

Definitely agree with you on this. Some more points i'd like to add:

What's the point of having TBI, when it doesn't have the authority to allocate it's funds or take decisions on it's own without the college's permission for every small thing?

Secondly, what are we to do in our final year during their PS time? Spend 6 months working for another company or devote more time to our startups? While i agree this is not an easy thing to solve, but maybe we can have a system to allow selected startups to be exempted from the PS system.

Abhinandan,

Aegis Centre for Entrepreneurship has a tie-up with TBI at Pilani and we will be glad to help you with any mentoring needs. Further feel free to seek any other assistance you may need and our team will try their best to help. Write to Swati for such assistance.

We had offered all incubate companies at TBI for free use of resources at our centers in Gurgaon and Chandigarh but did not find many takers. Also a couple of student teams we were mentoring for starting their companies dropped out of their projects.

I will be happy if you would like to use anything that we can help with. You and any other Bitsians are also welcome to do their summer training at our assisted companies. Sorry, cann't help with you with PS thing although it was under discussion with the faculty when I visited the campus last time.

regards

Sanjeev Kakar
