We are changing
the license on nvbio from GPLv2 to BSD. We believe that by switching to a more permissive license, it will be easier for others to use our work to create the next generation
of awesome bioinformatics tools.
In order to do so correctly, we will have to recreate the GitHub repository. This will happen in a
few phases:
-
A new repository has been created at http://github.com/nvlabs/nvbio-bsd with the BSD-licensed sources. It contains
the same history that we have today, except all changes are now licensed under the BSD license instead
-
The existing repository at http://github.com/nvlabs/nvbio has been renamed to http://github.com/nvlabs/nvbio-gpl
-
The nvbio-bsd repository will be renamed to nvbio
-
The nvbio-gpl branch will be closed – we cannot accept any contributions based on or derived
from the GPL branch, and we encourage you all to develop from the BSD branch only.
GitHub implements a redirection mechanism for repositories that are renamed. This means that, right now, existing git remotes and GitHub URLs will be transparently redirected to the
new nvbio-gpl project. However, once we reach step 3, this redirection will be broken, which means that anyone who wishes to continue working on the GPL branch will need to update their git remotes and GitHub URLs. We will wait a week before step 3 to allow
everyone some time to update.
