Hi all,

I'm just trying to get an update where we stand with respect to the house work weekend.  I haven't heard any feedback from anyone about it at all, except for the undergrads.  Is it even worthwhile trying to do?

My situation is that I got roped into coaching football up at the high school here this season and we're in our first week of practice.  I'm going to have to be up there from 3 pm - 6 pm Friday night, so I'm not going to be able to organize much.  I could probably make it into Reno by 7 pm and do a quick trip to buy supplies, with some help from someone with a truck.  I think I'd prefer to just cancel Friday if no one else is going to be there and hopefully the undergrads can use that time do some general cleaning.

I also have double-day practices Saturday, one at 7 am and the other directly following the first.  I can skip those to run the work day on Saturday, but it would be pretty disappointing to do that if no one else is planning to attend.

We budgeted $1000 toward the house clean-up.  We've had a busy couple of weeks, between the guys who went to Conclave, the decision not to purchase the house at this point, and the golf tournament.  I'm thinking involvement this weekend is going to be minimal.  I don't think it's right not to put the $1,000 toward the house on the basis of lack of alumni involvement in the weekend, if it comes to that.  I'd be happy to front the money for the undergrads and work with them on buying some general cleaning supplies and maybe a few bigger ticket items (dishwasher, garbage disposal, etc.), then get reimbursed from AVC.  If no one else shows up Saturday, is it ok with everyone if I work with the undergrads to make purchases toward supplies for the house?  I will help ensure that we are thrifty and stay within the confines of the $1000 budget.

Cody

That sounds good to me.  I don't think we really got the word out much about the house clean up as it is.

My wife got roped into working Saturday so I am not able to make most if any of it. Has the house cleanup weekend made it to the alumni list serve? I have no objections with you spending the $1000 if Jordan signs off.

By the way - The  sink in the kitchen still is not working, let's please address that.

Hi,
Before we buy any major appliances, I really think we need to talk to the landlords. Some of this stuff they should be handling. I would recommend that we not do anymore installations or improvements until we can have some dialogue with them. Generally speaking, tenants are not allowed to make any modifications to a property without prior consent of the landlord, and I would venture to say this is probably no different. I also want to have this discussion with them before replacing the carpet.

Thanks all for the feedback.  I did send an email to our alumni listserve last Wednesday (8/7) regarding the house cleanup and will follow that up with another one tomorrow.  Knowing this football thing was coming up for me, I didn't want to put a huge effort into driving attendance at this event because I knew I wasn't going to be able to commit to running the whole thing.

I both agree and disagree with you Jordan.  The house is in bad shape right now.  I completely agree that the outside should be taken much better care of for our landscapers.  However, looking back at the past, especially the 1058 days, we didn't do much better.  My first house cleanup at 1058 consisted of cleaning maggots out of the kitchen sink that had been there all summer, and cleaning the mess from the sump pump was backed up flooding the entire basement - two issues more disgusting than anything I've seen in the house this summer.  I do not remember any sort of alumni participation in the house cleanup either.  Care for the house got slightly better when we moved into the 401 house, but that deteriorated as well fairly quickly (and that was under my guide, so I deserve just as much blame as anyone else).  The reality is that it is really difficult to convince 18-24 year old males that caring for a house like ours is extremely important.  The dorms are the same way - even with maids who clean every day, there were times when my dorm experience was absolutely disgusting.  There's no doubt that care for the house is in a downswing right now, but I think saying that it was so much better in our day is not entirely true.  I feel like we should try to offer positive motivation/reinforcement rather than condescendence toward them.

Does anyone want to volunteer to contact the landlords about making improvements?  I'm happy to do as much of the legwork as possible in leading the purchasing and installing that stuff Saturday.  I'm not sure what the status of washers/dryers is, but I think replacing that dishwasher and garbage disposal are must-do items right away.  If we're going to drive home the cleanliness of the house being important (and I think we should), we have to give the guys the right equipment and tools to do that before the school year starts.  I think using that $1000 this weekend would be a good start.  I'm not planning on addressing the carpet situation, just appliances.

Thanks all,

Cody

I will spearhead the contact with the Guidici's regarding modifications to the house...but not until I get the green light that they've been contacted about us not buying the place. Can we put a hold on buying appliances for now and then if we still need to, do it at another time? Not too long from now, but just to give us enough time to discuss the house with the Guidici's.

No problem, I'll hold off on purchasing anything.  Jake - can you just shoot us a quick update on a status of what the house looks like when you get back in town?  Where do we stand on big stuff - carpet, washer/dryer, garbage disposal, dishwasher, etc?  I feel like my time in working on the house might be better utilized a different weekend when I can help install those things.

I will be out of town this weekend, so I won't be able to attend, either.

I can't be there, unfortunately. My sister is getting married and you better bet I'm going to be there : )

This is a worthwhile effort. I doubt the landlords will purchase any appliances - we brought all of those items into this house, I believe. Maybe not the disposal, but I'm pretty sure we already replaced that at some point (or parts of it). Those are only like $100 and can be replaced pretty easily. I totally get the point, but I don't think they landlord will do it and we're in a weird limbo of negotiations with them right now with the house purchase, so I don't know how much leverage we have or how much we can expect to happen very quickly.

This house absolutely needs to be cleaned up and looking amazing for the BMS Banquet (since we often get parents over) and for the beginning of the school year.

I can help with the installation of any appliances we may purchase for this weekend. Just keep me posted on what we do get so I can bring the right tools.
