Volunteers are sought to assist in planting up to 700 1-gallon native grass plugs on Ash Meadows NWR this coming Saturday. Holes are irrigation are already prepped, we just need some help putting plants into the ground.
The intent is to establish native cover in an area previously dominated by numerous weeds including Russian Knapweed, Johnson Grass, and Field Bindweed. Alkali Sacaton (Sporobolus airoides) is being planted to outcompete these invaders, establish sites which could be repopulated by rare plants, and provide improved wildlife habitat.
We know you have many volunteer opportunities to choose from during National Public Lands Day, but we would be honored if you would spend part of your Saturday morning with us.
The event will begin at 9 a.m. and last until noon. Planting tools will be provided, but bring gloves if you have them along with a hat and sunscreen. Water and snacks will be provided.
If you would like to participate please e-mail Christina Nalen at
