Before last week, when I wanted to access a student's work, I could look in either that student's folder on my Drive, or could go into my teacher folder, then into the folder for that assignment, and could find them all in the same place. Now, while that assignment sub-folder is still being created, it comes up empty. I haven't changed any settings or done anything differently when distributing assignments. Any help? Thanks in advance!

I am having the same problem. Now when I distribute files to students it places them in the student folders, not in my teacher folder as it used to. If the files are distributed to each student they go to their individual folder and if the file is distributed and shared with a group of students doctopus will randomly put the file in the student folder for one of the students it is shared with. Doctopus still creates a folder for the assignment in the teacher directory but it is empty (although I did notice that the files appear to be placed in that teacher folder temporarily when the files are being copied and shared but then they get moved to the student folders).  The workaround that I have been using is to search for the files in google drive and then move them to the teacher folder that Doctopus created during the distribution process.

Any help in correcting this new problem would be VERY much appreciated.  THANK YOU!!!

I don't love that workaround, since it then removes the assignment from the student folder. I like having it in both places.

I don't either but it's the best I can come up with right now when I need to access the files with as few clicks as possible to assess them. The students can always find them in their Shared with Me section of their google drive.

A fellow teacher of mine has the same issue. She selects the destination folder and distributes the docs. The docs get created in the individual student folders but the destination teacher folder is empty. This has happened since November.

Here's a video (no audio sorry) of the entire process:

You can see from the start of the video that it was assigned the teacher folder of "2 Greek Myth...".
Fast forward to 3:25 and you'll see that that folder is empty.

Any response is appreciated.

You guys, this is happening because Google killed the "Shift-Z" ability to have files in multiple folders. Someone who codes Doctopus needs to make it so the command to make shortcuts in the Teacher folder goes through.

I was so disgusted when they ended Shift-Z. I hate the new Shortcuts. I think they were trying to make it all very "Windows"-ish... one file, one place. But it just sucks. Google Drive was BETTER than windows because the file was actually in more than one place. Now its just messy bunch of shortcuts.

Hi there,
i'm afraid we are all experiencing the same issue; Doctopus does not work for documents or folders that must be shared; in the case of folders, the 'shift-z' seems to work  (I did it yesterday, I manually placed Class Edit and Class View in my students folders, using shift-z).  In the case of shared files, for teamwork and projects, ... I did not test it yet, but I suppose that the sharing permissions will be correct but the shared docs will not be placed within the team members' folders.
So, I look forward to a solution; in the meantime, I will 'survive' with manual arrangements.

Hello,

You are all correct, this issue is connected to how Google Drive has changed how files are being saved, so now you can't place a file in multiple folders or locations on your Drive, it instead makes a shortcut to the file. This structural change in Drive impacts this feature of Doctopus.
Thank you all for supporting one another and sharing the workarounds you have found. I reported this issue to the development team that maintains the add-ons but am unsure if a fix is scheduled in their roadmap. Until an update is announced I recommend you continue using the workarounds. Thanks again.

Hello,

Please encourage them to make this a priority; as a teacher grading assignments, having to go in and out of 100 folders to grade one assignment is a deal breaker! One of the main reasons Doctopus was useful was that all files for the assignment were in one location for the teacher.

Use the spreadsheet Doctopus creates for the assignment to access them - all the assignments are linked there, so no need to scroll through multiple folders to find them.

Hey all,

Just bumping this since it doesn't seem like it was updated or changed but could be changed since Shortcuts exist. Calling in the wind to see if anyone answers.

If anyone out there is still using Doctopus - Another simple workaround for the files not showing up in the teacher folder is, after Doctopus has just created them in student folders, to Search for the main assignment file name in Google Drive. You should see all the just-created files with student names added to the assignment name as the top (most recent) search results. Select the top result, scroll down to the final one that is a student file, hold Shift and click on the last student file - this should highlight all the ones in between as well - and then either right-click or use the menu at the top to create shortcuts of them all at once in your desired destination folder (presumably a subfolder of the Teacher folder).

That said, it would be great if the developers could update the code to create shortcuts instead of trying to "add" the file. It has been quite a while now since Google made that change.
