I have tried making a new spreadsheet and re-ingesting it, but I get the same error when I try to refresh edits and counts.

Hello Michelle,

Thank you for sharing the error message you are receiving.

Is it possible that any of the student emails addresses on your roster have changed? (or are there any student's on this roster who are no longer in your class?)
It looks like the error is related to a student permissions issue; Doctopus is trying to get permission from the file to check for edits and is unable to access it. (which could be an email misspelling, account no longer active etc)

Thanks!

All the students are the same. I tried making a new sheet in case there was an accidental change to any field.

The only possible change would be if a student changed the name of their file.

Could you make sure you are only logged into one Google account (very important) and then try to open up Doctopus in an incognito window?
If you still get stuck, can you see if the same error message comes up, if you don't get a pop-up error, can you hold down Control+Shift+J" on a PC or "Command+Option+I" on a Mac and when the side window opens, take a screenshot of the error console ( make sure the side window is on the 'console' tab). Thanks!!

The first image is the message in incognito mode

the 2nd image is in regular mode...there are several pages on the screen, but I captured the last one

This happened to me after a new student joined my class.

Hi Michelle,

Thank you for sharing the image of the error console. This console window shows any errors that are happening on the user side; the only errors that are populating are: 'Blocked by Client' and 'Failed to load Resource: 400'

Both of these could be connected to an ad-blocker extension preventing the add-on from loading correctly (interesting because usually extensions are not carried over into incognito mode unless pushed by the domain admin or enabled specifically by the user in the web browser settings)

Another thing that is recommended for these errors is to clear the browser cache & cookies. More info on how to do that here: https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/32050

Curious, does this happen on any other doctopus spreadsheets or only this one (& if applicable has this happened on any other step of doctopus, or only refresh edits?)

Thanks!!

I cleared cookies etc and get the same error message

I have tried creating a new spreadsheet and that is not fixing it either

I can search for new submissions and that does work fine

My other sheets will update edits and counts just fine.

Update:
I was able to delete the other students and try to refresh edits and counts for 5 at a time. It took a hot minute, but I was eventually able to get all but 2 kids to refresh edits and counts.

On all the other Doctopus files these same kids will refresh perfectly.

What do I look at for those 2 files to see if there is a problem?

UPDATED Update

The 2 students who would not refresh had both changed their sharing setting on the Google Doc to make it visible to anyone with the link. I changed it back to "specific people" and now I can refresh theirs as well

AS far as I can tell, the issue is when kids change the privacy setting of their document to make it viewable to a larger audience

Hello Michelle,

Thank you for all your investigation and these updates on what you found.
The students changing the sharing permissions would definitely cause interference and relates back to the first error message you shared regarding file permissions.
Doctopus was trying to get permission from the file to check for edits and was unable to access it because the permission level had changed.

Thank you once again for digging into this error, confirming it was a permission level issue and sharing this information with the group. It is really helpful for others who may come across the same issue.

I am getting this same message. I have tried looking at the sharing permissions and many of the other suggestions in this post, but it doesn't seem to be making a difference. I am unable to load any counts and edits.  Any other suggestions on what I can try?

When this happened to me, it was because ONE student changed their file to "anyone with link" can view (or edit or comment)

I had to find that ONE person and reset them to the original share settings (me and them). To do that quickly, I went to the Classroom Folder that holds the assignment. I clicked Details so I could see who was shared on the file and then clicked my way through the names until I found them. Of course, it was a kid in the W's.

It worked! Thank you so much!

It worked for me as well, however: is there any way that the edit counts can be done with the sharing setting on "anyone with the link"? I like to give permissions to see the assessments to administration and possible inspections, and this is a quick way.
