Hello,

I would like to know the maximum amount of tags AutoCrat can handle. I have over 300 tags and it does not seem to run properly. I would also like to know if I can run multiple templates at a time.

Thank you,

I don't know if there is a fixed number of maximum merge tags but 300 is getting pretty high.

You don't say what "not running properly" means.  Make two copies of your template. Delete the top 150 tags from one and the bottom 150 from the other.  Set up two merge jobs using these two templates.  You will find out if it is a problem with a merge tag or not.

You can only have one template per merge job but can have multiple merge jobs.  If you are going to run by using a trigger, remember that it is the total work that counts.  My experience is it is best to keep the number of merge jobs to a minimum.

I am having the same problem. Did you ever get an answer to this?

I don't know that there is a magic number.  I have seen over a hundred for sure.  If you think it is the number of merge tags, make a copy of the template and delete parts of it.  If you have 200 tags, cut the template in half to 100 tags.

Are you getting any output?  Are some tags merged?  Anything in the status column?

We can help with more information.

I'm having a similar problem. I'm able to merge 300 ish tags into a docs / pdf file.

If I go slightly over, I get the majority of tags merged, but some unmerged tags as well. If I go far beyond (my original job has almost 600 tags), I get no tags merged at all.
Since I'm using it for only two rows, I don't think its Google's rows limitation, and it takes less than 6 minutes, so I also don't think runtime is a limitation either.
I don't know if there is a maximum number of tags limitation.

If I separate it into three jobs (200 ish tags each), it merges everything as it was supposed to be done.

Are there any developments on this issue?

Regards

João Pedro

I believe you have found the an undocumented part of autocrat have not been able to find a fixed number of merge cells to be allowed.

I don't know how autocrat stores the identification of the merge tags and exactly where they point to within the spreadsheet. Oh I can say is if you figured out something that works use it. If not, keep reducing the size to find a number of merge tags that work for you.

Thanks for the reply.

I managed to reduce the number of tags using the Gsheets functions themselves: INDIRECT, ADDRESS, ROW, COLUMN, QUOTIENT, MOD, CONCATENATE, etc... but it took me hours to have everything adjusted.

Do you have any idea if there are plans to increase this limit?

It would be a major time saver, specially when you import data which wasn't arranged in an optimal way for merging. Just to explain my situation:
I had to run a mock of an examination, with 180 multiple choice questions and different keys. My goal was to create a detailed report for each student where it would say the right answer, their answer and a sign for right or wrong (that's 540 tags already).

As I mentioned before, it worked well when I separated the outputs in three runs, but I ended up with three different files to be merged afterwards. Since I only had to done for two entries, it was doable to merge them manually.
But in the future, I might have to do it for a bigger number of students. Do you know to automate the merging of documents?
Sorry for this question, I'm still new to Autocrat.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the explanation. I may ramble a bit here because I'm dictating and don't have access to my laptop.

Have you looked at flubaroo. It is an add-on that grades quizzes and produces a report that is sent to the student to tell them which questions they got. It has lots of options.  Way more than Google quizzes

There are ways to stack multiple pieces of information in one column, so you could probably summarize everything about a question in one merge tag. I don't know if that would help, but it is possible to do with a formula. You can use an array formula to do that. If you want to explore that option, I can find a YouTube video that explains how to do it.

I don't believe there's any plans to expand autocrat. I didn't write out autocrat nor have any control over autocrat. It is supplied by New visions Charity which supports the New York School system. There should be a link somewhere in the use of they add-ons that tell you before about divisions.

Maybe when I have access to a laptop we can discuss this further. If you wish you can send a dialogue straight to my email address, glua...@gmail.com

Thanks! This will be handy as well!

I'll try it with online quizzes. But for the paper ones, I'll still have to find a good workaround.

I'm sorry to take so long to get back to you.

There are ways to consolidate data so that you use fewer merge tags.

Submit this short quiz to see some examples.

See this spreadsheet for example of merging data into one tag per question.

See this spreadsheet for methods to grade quizzes.

Warning - I have not updated this in quite a while.  In testing, I found that the CopyDown add-on had stopped working.  It is fixed now.

If I knew how you display the questions, I might be able to suggest a solution to reduce the number of merge tags.

Let me know if you have any questions.
