This summer has been really busy with moving, and I got married two weeks ago, so I am just starting to explore all that the city has to offer. I'm excited to meet all of you! If anyone wants to check out the Wicker Park neighborhood (sort of central-west area of Chicago), I know a good Spanish tapas restaurant.

The Chicago architecture foundation has some fun walking tours that are inexpensive and interesting (there is also the more expensive boat tour, which is good but more of a commitment). The Chicago Art Institute has a large permanent collection and usually something interesting in their temporary exhibits, as well as a new modern wing. The museum of science and industry is worth the longer drive/ride and is kid approved by the girl I babysit for. Also, Chicago summers are filled with festivals so if you guys are here already, you should check them out (Metromix.com is a good resource for those).

My name is Steph. Like Stef from the last e-mail, I just graduated from UW Madison with my Bachelors in communicative disorders, so I also think I'm maybe starting the 2 year track this fall. We'll see...
I moved to Evanston with my fiance in mid-May and I've been working with preschoolers at a clinic in Skokie over the summer. When I'm not working, I love running. Luckily Evanston is a beautiful city for jogging! I've done 2 half marathons in Chicago this summer and I'm signed up for a third in the city on Halloween morning!
I've also been busy planning my wedding for September of 2011. It sounds like a lot of you have gotten married recently so we'll definitely have something to chat about!
I'm really looking forward to meeting everyone. I think a meetup of some kind before orientation would be fantastic. Definitely keep me posted!
Steph
Hi everyone!
I have been away from my email the past few days as I moved to my new apartment-what a nice surprise to find all of your emails waiting!
My name is Liz and I actually grew up in the Chicago suburbs although I lived in Atlanta, Georgia the last few years. I graduated from Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois with a degree in child development. That means I will be on the 3 year track as well-so glad I'm not the only one!
I'm starting to get settled in Evanston and am so happy to be 'home'! I would love to meet up and have lots of free time before school starts. My fiance is still in Atlanta finishing up grad school so I'll definitly be looking for things to do. I have a dog and would love to find a walking buddy for any of you living in Evanston.
One more thing, I am not on facebook so please keep me updated on any outings. My cell is (312)479-3708.
Talk to you all soon, Liz

Hello Hello,I am Caitlyn. So great to hear from everyone. It is also great to hear that I am not the only person on the 3 year track.I graduate from Marymount Manhattan College with a BA in Theater performance and Costume design. This September marks the third year I have lived in Chicago, which is crazy! and I'm signing up for 3 more. It is a great place and I hope everyone will be happy here. While in Chicago, I have been working in the Costume Shop at Steppenwolf Theater company and doing costumes for various other theaters around Chicago, but I am looking forward to a new challenge.I am originally from Colorado and love outdoor adventures, picnics, FOOD, art, and music. Unfortunately, I am working and out of town up until we have orientation but I look forward to meeting all of you very soon!!!!Until then have fun exploring,

Hey all,
Great idea to start a group! My name is Kyle, but I'm actually female, despite my parents' interesting choice in names. I just graduated from the University of Illinois in Urbana with a bachelor's in linguistics, so I'll be on the 3 year track, as well. I'm so glad there's such a big group of us! I'm thinking of doing the neurogenic track, since it seems to have a big linguistics base.
I grew up in Evanston and am currently living there with my boyfriend. I'm actually going to be out of town until next week, but I would love to get together before orientation if there are any more outings planned!
Looking forward to meeting everyone!
Kyle

Wohoo! I'm so glad that you guys are introducing yourselves on this thread! It's so fun to read everybody's background because it's so diverse! I just met my roommate today and she's actually a 2nd year in the program. She's so jealous that we have an email group that we can use to communicate with each other. heheheMelanie, I might have to ask you for vegetarian/vegan recipes! I'm not actually vegetarian, but, I love vegetables! Though, I don't know what to do with them other than to sauté it with garlic. :)And for those of you coming from LA: I was just there and I absolutely love the city! So much great food! I'm pretty sure that I gained at least 5 lbs the past 3 weeks I was there. Are you all ready for Chicago's winter? I think the transition from Seattle's low-mid 30s to Chicago's winter will be hard for me. I don't think I packed enough warm clothes! hahaSee you guys soon and I can't wait to hear from the rest of you!

I guess I'm the third Ste(ph/f)anie in the group! Which I guess means
that half the time I'll probably be responding to the wrong person
when I hear my name haha. I'm from Fort Worth, Texas and I received my
bachelor's in Journalism at the University of Texas in Austin. I'm set
for the two year track and right now I'm interested in neurogenic but
I haven't completely made up my mind yet.
As excited as I am to start grad school, I'm a little nervous as well.
My mind's a little dusty right now because, to be completely honest, I
haven't done anything SLP related since May. Whoops! I see all of
y'all (I say 'y'all' way too much, please don't judge!) doing all of
this amazing SLP work and I'm like at my part time job with Apple.
Embarrassing! I'm also moving from a place where the average summer
temperature is 100 degrees to Evanston, where I am definitely not
prepared to freeze during the winter. I'm so with all of the
California people right now.
Other than that, I love unapologetically bad pop music (if it's from
the 90s, even better), Project Runway (please tell me some of y'all
are tuning in this season. Last week. So dramatic. If so, we should
definitely get together to watch the season finale), any and all dogs
(I'm so sad to leave my own so I'd love to play with your dog,
Elizabeth!), Wii games, aquariums/amusement parks, and I also love
vintage fashion/scrounging around the flea market for neat/useless
things that I probably don't need (oh hey, Melanie!).
And can I just say that I love the fact that we are all total foodies?
I can't cook worth a damn but I am so down with finding good food with
y'all at the expense of my ever-expanding waistline. The fact that
Chicago is a foodie's paradise may or may not have factored into my
decision with Northwestern.....priorities! Anyhow, we need to eat our
way through Evanston/Chicago and I'm so happy that all of my fellow
SLP grads are such advocates of tasty food. Which brings me to tapas
night - unfortunately I'll be arriving next Wednesday so I won't be
able to join in the festivities but I'm hoping to see some of you
before then or hear all about it during orientation.
Are any of you living in Englehart this year? I decided to go with
grad housing for my first year since I'm out of state and unfamiliar
with the area. It'd be nice to have somebody to walk to class with
every day!
Please feel free to call/text me if you need anything! 817-925-9995.
See y'all soon,
Stephanie
Hi Everyone,
I’ve seen people passing along information about local activities and attractions on here and since we have so many foodies in the group I thought you might be interested in the Evanston farmer’s market. There are several in Evanston but there is one at Oak and University Place (right near campus and where I think a lot of us are living). Here’s the link: http://www.cityofevanston.org/evanston-life/farmers-market/ if you want more information. From what I hear it’s one of the larger ones in the area.
I can’t wait to see a lot of you next week for tapas. Have a great weekend!
Liz
Another introduction!
My name is Lesley Rivetto; I graduated from Northwestern in 2006 with
a degree in journalism, so I will be in the three-year track for the
MA in SLP. I am looking forward to meeting the other three-year
students and I am so excited there is such a crew of us!
I live in Chicago, and I have lived here pretty much since I graduated
from NU. I just quit my job last Friday (finally!) - it was exciting!
I worked for Illinois Institute of Technology (which is located on
the south side in the Bronzeville neighborhood by the White Sox
stadium, US Cellular) in graduate recruitment. I did communications
and special events, specifically, so this is a big career change.
I live in Old Town, so I'll be one of the purple line express riders
up to campus for the next few years. Glad I am not the only city
commuter!
Otherwise, about me: I run; I cook (bake mostly); I enjoy travel; and
I'm a vegetarian (so I think I fit in pretty well with the group..
ha!).
I just signed up for the lunch at Norris tomorrow, and I look forward
to meeting the group there. See some of you tomorrow, and the rest
next week!
Cheers,
Lesley
