Hey guys,

If you're around, be sure to come to Nurses PUSH General Body Meeting, this Wednesday, October 22, 12n-1pm in NEB 113b. In light of Allies Week/ National Coming Out Day, our theme will be:
Challenges faced by LGBT youth during the coming out process, and what allied nurses can do to help!
We will be focusing on issues related to LGBT coming out process, problems with harrasment and bullying in adolescent LGBT youth, and, most importantly, what we, as Allied Nurses, can do to help alleviate some of these factors.  We have a little exercise prepared to provide a sense of what it's like to come out. We'll also be showing a brief documentary clip of the tragedies that can occur from LGBT hate crimes among adolesents, and will have time for hearty discussion about what we can do as health care providers. We will also be electing a finance chair and talking about nominations for an LGBT- friendly faculty award within the SON. Oh, and in case we forgot to mention thus far, pizza and drinks will be served. OH YEAH.

Best,
Danielle

PS- We've received a lot of feedback that 12noon on Weds does now work for many of you, particularly 2nd degree students, grad students, and faculty. For those of you still interested in nursesPUSH, we were thinking of trying out Wednesdays at 4pm to hold meetings and events. Hopefully this would work better for you, so keep your eyes peeled for further updates.

PPS- Two great events in the future related to LGBT/allies. See below if anything interests you...

1) Allies (Gay-Straight Alliance) is holding it's first event Wednesday October 22nd from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. in Wynn Commons. The event is a candlelight vigil in honor of Matthew Shepard, a young boy who was beaten to death in 1998 because of his sexual orientation. The vigil will be followed by a brief reception in Houston Hall. For more information about this event or Allies, contact Atlee Melillo at at...@sas.upenn.edu.

2) Monday, October 27th meeting of Delightful Discourses, NEB room 212 from noon - 1:00pm.  The session leaders will be Drs. Jane Barnsteiner and Nancy Hanrahan.  The article is to serve as a jumping off point for discussion, the focus is not oncology but the content in the article. For more information contact Barbara Beacham at barbara...@gmail.com
