Hey guys,First of all, thank you for an incredibly wonderful first semester! The interest generated about LGBT healthcare issues within the school of Nursing is gaining momentum, and it is in no little way because of the support of allies, friends, faculty members, professionals, and LGBT folks like yourself. We've had Dr. Makadon speak on LGBT issues in healthcare, a bake sale with (semi)healthy foods on Locust Walk, a cirriculum discussion, an allies week presentation, a team from ACT-UP Philadelphia, and a nurse from the Manzoni center on Trans issues, all within the first semester(!), but they would've meant nothing were it not for your support! We are so grateful for all the discussions to which you were able to attend, and all the wonderful suggestions and contributions you've made... We look forward to seeing more of you in the future :)
That being said, Nurses PUSH will be holding our Last GBM of the semester, Monday, November 18, at noon (room TBD), where we will talk about the direction of our club, what you liked about the meetings, what you'd like to see more of, or what you'd like to change... We are also working with Lamba Legal (a grad student LGBT group) to see if someone can come talk to us about how hospital visitation rights, powers of attorneys, and right to surrogate decision making will be affected by the passage of Proposition 8 in California this past Tuesday. Should be a pretty interesting discussion and lend tips to how to best advise your LGBT patient in terms of writing clear advanced directives involving their partner in their care.
We will also talk about faculty nominations, with one last call for suggestions as to who gets the first ever Nurses PUSH (Name to be determined) Award.
We hope to see you there!
Best,Nurses PUSH

About: "Active Minds, Inc. began as a student organization at Penn when
founder, Alison Malmon, was a junior at the College. Now, it is the
only national nonprofit organization dedicated to utilizing the young
adult voice to raise mental health awareness among college students. We
have over 160 chapters on campuses across the U.S. with students
working to increase awareness of mental health, provide information and
resources about mental health and mental illness and encourage students
to seek help as soon as needed. We are thrilled to be returning to Penn
to celebrate our fifth year. Join us and see how one Penn alumnus is
making a difference and working to change the conversation around
mental health."
