Hi
if the Coalition for Transportation Choices is to branch out to various forms of alternate transportation, keep in mind the East Bay Bike Path is a national treasure as reported below in the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy e-newsletter. Unfortunately the directions to the bike trail if you follow the link refer only to driving and parking, I saw no mention of the various RIPTA bus lines (#32, 33, 34, 60) that intersect the path adding much flexibility to possible trips (for a recreational ride I like to take the bus to Bristol and ride back to Prov one-way) I try to emphaize transit connections all the time.
Also note reference to "World carfree day" Sept 22 which I hadn't heard about, and how Rails-to-Trails is lobbying for "active transportation" namely biking/walking, as part of the federal transport law renewal as can be linked under advocacy below.
In my opinion, the environmental community should be making more of an effort to actively promote biking for air quality, climate change, energy and health related reasons, especially as it can be such fun!
Barry

right now some use bikes for the recreational aspect which is what the bike paths are all about and are not in a important sense how people get to work see doctors, take the kids to school,  go shopping, etc; many people do however bike in the transit sense and thereby put themselves at material risk and injury from you know what...
its important to always link walking and biking so that we emphasize their common modality and takes into account many like the elderly or very young....

wonder if we can fashion a policy that restricts you know what by creating structural and financial inhibitions on you know what
eg [] bike and walk to work day in Prov would also mean no cars allowed a that day, period;
{} or special restrictions allow rider and pedestrians  to use certain streets etc but prohibits cars from same.(with the usual caveats for ER vehicles and such)
