Dean and I have finished a new version of the New NUPF Newsletter to be released this week with the help of Kristen’s suggestions. You can find it at www.nupf.org/ then click the Newsletter tab in the Main Menu. This provides a direct link for you all to take a look and offer suggestions.

We have also imported the NUPF listserv into MailChimp an easier distribution method which tracks how many people open the Newsletter, when they open the Newsletter, as well as the links in the Newsletter they click.

In order to streamline the Event Submission and advertising on the Website, Newsletter, Google Calendar, Facebook, and creating an RSVP link in EventBright for your event, I have created a PDF which details all the information in a step by step fashion. It outlines what information your committee must submit for an Event to be advertised and how to create an EventBright RSVP. This is a great way to track how many people are coming to an event and email only those people a reminder.

Hi Everyone,

Great idea, just wanted to send across a couple of reminders, if Northwestern will be represented on the items (other than as part of NUPF), specific vendors are required and there are additional approval steps required in order to brand anything with Northwestern.  This usually doesn’t take very long, but does require a few extra days.  One other thing to keep in mind is, if you are interested in reaching postdocs not only in the sciences, but all disciplines, the water bath floaties may not appeal to them as much.  Cross-discipline items may be things like pens, magnets, buttons, or lip balm (we recently used the circle lip balms and they were a hit, not just for kids!).  If you’d like to chat more, please let me know.

Hey, I just got home from the airport after being in DC for three days for advocacy for the national multiple sclerosis society. I am pretty exhausted. If I do not make the call in the morning all of the receipts for January and February have been submitted to COFO and are being processed and mailed. I plan to do a quarterly ledger review with Jittra from COFO at the end of the month. I have a lot of work to complete even into the evening tomorrow before I leave for another trip on Saturday but I'm happy to come to the mile north hotel for the first hour and charge the food as well.

I think it would be good to only have one site floating around since the old one is no longer being updated. I would suggest the same for the facebook page. I think it is confusing to have two nupf facebook groups, so maybe just delete one?

Just as a heads up, for printing purposes, in order to use the Northwestern branding (N, colors, etc), you will need to use a preferred vendor, which once the design is finalized, I can help you with contact info.  The cards are super inexpensive and are completed very quickly.

For balance purposes, you may be able to use the horizontal Northwestern lockup across the top of the front of the card, that would bring the mission statement down some?

Kristen pointed me to a mentor training opportunity coming up on June 20-21 at the Big Ten Center in Rosemont, IL (by Ohare airport). Please see below for further information. Registration is free and meals during the conference are provided and hotel (if desired) and transportation are covered through reimbursement from NRMN-CAN. Participation in both days is required, the second day is only half of a day though.

I have considered attending myself, but won't be able to make it. Kristen has ONE spot left to fill, so please respond to her directly if you wish to take it. If it is not filled by Wednesday, she will post to their website.

NRMN-CAN Postdoctoral Mentor Training Workshop

You are invited to participate in a National Research Mentoring Network Mentoring Workshop in Chicago on June 20th and 21st with an opening reception the evening of June 19th. This evidence-based workshop uses a process-based training approach to provide training that strengthens your current research mentoring experiences and research productivity, approaching the topic from both sides of the relationship. You’ll reflect on how to be a more responsive mentor as well as a more proactive mentee.

The training, with support from NIH, has been embraced by an increasing number of institutions
and professional societies and organizations and positively impacted both faculty and trainees. The workshop is being facilitated by NRMN Master Facilitators, Drs. Andrew Greenberg from the University of Wisconsin and Robert Tillman from the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston with the participation of senior faculty from NRMN-CAN institutions.

The following areas of mentorship practices and interests will be addressed during the 1.5 day workshop:

That's ok. I should have caught that too. Thanks so much for going Haley! I'm glad you found another CSO person.

The first time at the symposium was so popular, I'm surprised the second one wasn't as well. I think things will pick up over the summer. I've got some pretty swell ideas and I think we can promote the crap out of things and also get some new volunteers in nupf and such.

A refresher in spending money $$$ with NUPF...

BEFORE you buy anything contact me (5 business days prior) to receive tax exemption from Jittra at COFO.  I can send this via email.  NO ONE will be reimbursed for tax on anything (I have also made this mistake).

If you (or a committee member) is contacting me about reimbursement please send:

1. Name

2. Address for Check to be mailed

3. Receipts (original with last four of credit card number, unless this can be printed - for example a Panera receipt is the SAME when they drop it off)

You can bring them to my office in Tarry 6-717 OR you can send them directly to Jittra at COFO via inter office mail (710 N. Lake Shore Drive, Abbott Hall, 7th floor, Chicago, Illinois, 60611).  If you choose the later please email me and give me the 3 items (including a scan of the receipt) and I will take over the signed slip to begin processing your reimbursement while she waits for the originals via inter office mail.

Tipping has come up a lot lately... if it is IN a restaurant we can tip UP TO 20%.  If it is a delivery, there is typically already a separate delivery charge, $5 is a normal tip.  Use your best judgement.

I don't need to personally approve expenses that were already approved in the annual budget.  If you are going to switch some things around (for example international added a small event and CAP added money left over from one event to another) a heads up is great.  It can be during the bi-weekly calls or via email.  The one thing I will say is if you are using internal catering the prices for various things (i.e. tables) are exorbitant so please be mindful.

As most of you may already know I'm moving to Netherlands thus will leave NU soon. It has been a delightful experience to work with all of you to support the postdoctoral community at NU. I'm glad that I get to know all of you. I'm sure that NUPF will continue to enhance the postdoctoral experience here with our new members. With mixed feelings, I'm writing to resign from my Administrative Coordinator position in EC and say goodbye to everyone. Due to my extremely busy schedule in my remaining 1 month here, I'm afraid I won't be able to attend any future meetings. However, if you need my help for our upcoming symposium, I will be more than happy to help. 

I'm sure that I will see most of you around before I leave. I'm practically living in the lab these days but I will try to stop by our social events so that I can chat with you.

Hi NUPFers,

Our biggest annual event, the symposium, is less than a week away! I have seen a lot of your names on the registrants' list - thank you all for coming!

Within a total of 100 registered postdocs and graduate students, 25 faculty and staff members, speakers, sponsors, and supporters, it is hard to keep track of all NUPFers who have RSVPed. This, however, is very important for the success of the event, because:

• We want to make sure you all have proper NUPF name tags - so that you will be immediately recognized, become a face of NUPF, promote our future events, and recruit new members!
  
  
• We, the organizing committee, would like to know whom we can count on, should we spontaneously need a hand on site for some last-minute actions. All of the core symposium tasks are well covered by CAP members, but it would be very helpful to know who else will be there from NUPF.

Therefore, I am asking you to please fill out the following very short doodle poll. Should you not be able to make it to the entire event, you can indicate time slots when you will be there.

Also, we are still looking for a volunteer to take pictures of the event. A good camera would obviously be best, but if you enjoy taking pictures and just have your phone available, that's fine. Please email me if you are interested.
If you are not available for the entire event, but would like to take pictures during part of it, please let me know also, and I will try to assign different people to different parts of the program.

Hi everyone,

These are NUPF-intensive days for all of us - let's only do a quick recap of the symposium this Thursday, September 15th, at 7:30 AM, taking advantage of fresh memories to share some thoughts about the event! We should also quickly chat about the upcoming NPAW events. No other items on the agenda! I will not even send out an official one.
