Ifyou use SkyDrive or some other file sharing servicing, you may have realized that these services come with upload restrictions. SkyDrive is 2GB and Google Drive is 10GB (Microsoft are you listening?) 7zip, my favorite & free file compression utility, offers to split large files into multiple smaller ones based on a maximum file size.(Did I mention it is free?) This is real easy to do in the full 7zip software as shown below. Any files over 2GB are split into file.7z.001, file.7z.002, file.7z.003 (not their real names). You can later use the 7zip program to recombine them into one file or directory again. Right click the file you wish to be smaller so it uploads successfully & select Add to Archive. The specify in the Split Volume bytes field a value of 2GB or in the case of SkyDrive/OneDrive 1900M to be safe & below the threshold.
But how do you do this from the command line? Well with thanks to a little help from this link we van now specify a maximum volume size in 7zip. Enter -v switch. Here is the syntax: -vSize[b k m g] Here b is bytes, k is kilobytes, m is megabytes & you guessed it, g is gigabytes. So it could potentially look something like this 7z a a.7z *.txt -v10k -v15k -v2m. Just add a -v switch with a number and data measurement behind it. -v11k is 11 kilobytes before 7zip splits it. -v2g is 2GB before 7 zip splits it. Or in my case when using SkyDrive something like this. (Note: Skydrive/OneDrive does not like folks going over 2GB on uploads, so set yours to about 1900m to be safe.)
I can split the files with the split command, but the owner of the disk has Windows, so I decided to generate a multipart 7zipped file from command line. As the original file is already compressed, I use no compression switch:
Hi! Thank you very much for this tutorial. I was curious if you knew a way to split a text file by lines instead of max size. We have txt file with a bunch of records on each line. When I split it by size, it cut some of the lines in half, which break the record and give us false-positives. Any info would be greatly appreciated!!
Seems like there should be a more efficient way than reading through each line of code in a group of files with cat and redirecting the output to a new file. Like a way of just opening two files, removing the EOF marker from the first one, and connecting them - without having to go through all the contents.
That's just what cat was made for. Since it is one of the oldest GNU tools, I think it's very unlikely that any other tool does that faster/better. And it's not piping - it's only redirecting output.
You could support partial blocks in mid-file, but that would add considerable complexity, particularly when accessing files non-sequentially: to jump to the 10340th byte, you could no longer jump to the 100th byte of the 11th block, you'd have to check the length of every intervening block.
Given the use of blocks, you can't just join two files, because in general the first file ends in mid-block. Sure, you could have a special case, but only if you want to delete both files when concatenating. That would be a highly specific handling for a rare operation. Such special handling doesn't live on its own, because on a typical filesystem, many file are being accessed at the same time. So if you want to add an optimization, you need to think carefully: what happens if some other process is reading one of the files involved? What happens if someone tries to concatenate A and B while someone is concatenating A and C? And so on. All in all, this rare optimization would be a huge burden.
There are compression utilities that produce multipart archives, such as zipsplit and rar -v. They aren't very unixy, because they compress and pack (assemble multiple files into one) in addition to splitting (and conversely unpack and uncompress in addition to joining). But they are useful in that they verify that you have all the parts, and that the parts are complete.
In this way you choose to split one big file to smaller parts of 500 MB. Also you want that names of part files is SmallFile. Note that you need dot after file name.The result should be generation of new files like this:

I split a 100 MB file using 7zip and uploaded into a website.Later I downloaded all files but unable to get the original file.Each file size is showing correctly but when I extract it extracts only one file of size 1 KB. I tried 7zip,winrar and HJsplit but no use.Please help
I have split a 200 MB video file into 4 50 MB files using 7-zip software and uploaded on to Skydrive. They now have extension*.zip.001 thru *.zip.004. However, I could not find any way to get back to the original single file so that I can view the video from skydrive. Is there any way to do this?

Very easy, just highlight the FIRST file then the Combines Files option will be available. Just press OK then it will automatically combine the files into original file. Make sure you put all the parts in the same folder.
I am trying to send a volume which is encrypted with VeraCrypt. Is it posible to 7zip that in the way described above, to chop it down into smaller files, and the recipient can rebuild by opening the first file in 7zip his end?

Thanks for testing. I should have mentioned that I've had no luck in the past, so I've usually done the same approach as you did BrewManNH, with the addition of checking whether of not the file exists.

So I made a Linux virtual image for a friend in Canada to use in Oracle Virtualbox. Yet do to my not having access to a FTP server large enough to host the file for them i am forced to use a notorious file-sharing service that shall remain unnamed. Meanwhile in preparation of this i figured i might as well take the while VM folder and compress it into a 7zip file to make it easier on their capped Canadian Internets.
So my first attempt was using ARK to compress the folder. That's when i noticed it was acting very single threaded. The machine i was on has 8 physical cores for a total of 8 logical cores. This upset me very much as it means there was inefficiency and it would take more time to compress. This led me to believe that command line would be the most optimal way as there is no option in ARK or the other archive manager i have installed to allow for multiple threads in compression for anything.
So i go about doing a little research as i haven't used 7zip in Linux via command line, ever. Windows yes especially using the PortableApps version of 7zip, But in Linux i have no experience with the command. Time to learn something new!
Now this kept giving me an error "E_INVALIDARG" which was cryptic as heck. Time to poke around and see what command it was that is causing the issue, which ended up being the -txz. Turns out you need to use the -m0= command to state what form of compression algorithm you want to use. In the reading i did it showed that LZMA2 was the optimal multithreaded one.
What you want is unlikely to exist, if only because when doing a restore, the software has to figure out which media the backup is on, so it has to have some kind of directory to look such things up in, and such a directory has to be stored in the archive - which is going to require you to have both the 'directory' disk and the 'storage' disk be read. Even if you were to write it yourself, you'd end up having to at least temporarily (for the length of the backup session) track which files had been backed up so they didn't get backed up twice.
Use --multi-volume (-M) on the command line, and then tar will, when it reaches the end of the tape, prompt for another tape, and continue the archive. Each tape will have an independent archive, and can be read without needing the other. (As an exception to this, the file that tar was archiving when it ran out of tape will usually be split between the two archives; in this case you need to extract from the first archive, using --multi-volume (-M), and then put in the second tape when prompted, so tar can restore both halves of the file.)
