Iam very confused about why Alienware m18 R1 AMD only has 3 SSD slots. Its Intel counterpart has 4. It makes me wondering whether I'm paying 3799 to buy a "less premium" laptop with intentional degradation. I want to ask if there's any good reason about why Alienware made that decision?

@Singing Bird I've had a response from Alienware. The different configs use completely different motherboard designs. The design of the 4080/4090 board with Intel CPU allows the room for the additional two 2230 SSD slots. The design of the AMD board with these same GPU's only allows room for one additional 2230 slot.

Also, the speaker on M series is terrible, but on X series the speaker is said to be fairly good. I'm wondering how Alienware came to the decision that their most powerful laptop doesn't need to be equipped with proper speakers.

The x series is designed to have more features than the m series, which includes a better speaker setup. I believe the x16 had a 6 speaker system which is pretty impressive. The m series is designed around performance but misses out on a few other features.

I haven't been able to find out anywhere for sure what the R14 desktop has available for storage. According to the Alienware/Dell website, it has a m.2 2230 slot for the wifi/bluetooth card and a m.2 2280 slot for an nvme drive. One place I found while researching suggested that there might be an additional m.2 2280 slot for a second nvme drive, but most websites I've found report that there's only one m.2 2280 slot. How many nvme slots are there on the desktop R14 motherboard? And if there is only one nvme slot, are there enough pcie slots to add an adapter and an additional nvme drive?

Just because it has an m.2 2230 slot for the WiFi chip doesn't mean Dell has allowed storage support through that slot. More than likely they have not seeing as it's Dell and generally they haven't in the past

Believe they limited expansion drive bay's to make room for more cooling options, which isn't a bad design choice since Alienware Auroras are designed towards standard gaming not generally catering towards graphics design or what have you where most use more than just one NVME and 1 SSD/HDD. Throw in a 1TB NVME and a 2TB SSD and most gamers that just game are covered. If they came out with a new 51 series and it had the limited expansion then I'd be raising concerns since that's designed towards more than just gaming

If you need more storage, then a NAS makes more sense. Even an older PC running Linux, stuffed with HDDs is a reasonable option. FreeBSD/FreeNAS for example. Others are available.

The Alienware is a racing car, not a minivan.

That's why I am confused. The service manual has instructions for installing and removing a 2.5" SSD, but at the same time they do not support that frame size according to the technical specifications.

I have an Aurora R11 with an RTX3090. I have one PCIe slot in use for a SSD adapter. I was wondering if there would be room for another one. It looks iffy and I'm unsure since the graphics card is said to take up "2.5" slots.

The air movement on the new FE GPUs is up (on the back axis), but it would still reduce air movement and contribute to chassis heat to some extent. Standard airflow is pull from bottom and out the side. This seems like the latter, at least where you see the heatsink

Yeah, but the photo showing airflow is upside down. You can tell by the orientation of the slot covers. This is a standard non-fe double fan open air shroud. The fan pulls air from the bottom and out the side of the gpu... so whatever heat is generated by the 2.5" druve is being used to "cool" the gpu. I mean it's not significant, but it does generate some heat, and obstruct airflow from the bottom vent of the pc case (the 2.5" drive sits directly on the bottom vent.).

Dell says their new Alienware Aurora R13 desktop has two slots for m.2 NVMe PCIe SSDs although they only sell it with one SSD and one HDD. Their specifications document says it can only be used with one SSD. Does anyone have knowledge of being able to install a second 1-2 TB SSD on the R13 motherboard (for storage) and having it work well?

Hello John C I have purchased Alienwate 17 r2 and Samsung PM951 m2 NGFF SSD. I am unable to powerup system with it installed. Are the parts you recommend in above post compatibile with this system? Eg: PF19K and 331T3 they have different slots and it looks like Alienware 17 r2 has 4x NGFF M2 M-type edge only. Which I find strange that Samsung PM951 SSD dont power up on it. Are there any settings that can be changed in BIOS to help with it?

Dell Inspiron 3847 is a Mini Tower form factor computer. The Mini Tower is the largest chassis in the business class desktops segment. If you are looking for a system with maximum upgradability, Dell Inspiron 3847 is a good option. Models in this category usually have 4x PCIe slots, several drive bays and better cooling.

Yes, you can upgrade Dell Inspiron 3847 for gaming with better processors, graphics card, memory, and storage devices. However, like many other business pre-built PCs, this model may have proprietary elements like the power supply, the chassis or the power connector, which can make it difficult for usersto install aftermarket PSUs to support better GPUs. You can also find that there is space constrains inside the chassis, making it difficult to accommodete larger GPU to boost the gaming performance.

No, Dell Inspiron 3847 does not meet the Windows 11 hardware requirements. According to Windows 11 specification, all models with Intel 7th Gen CPU or older are not officially supported. Processor with TPM 2.0 and a UEFI Secure boot BIOS is also required in order to upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11 through Windows Update.

You can upgrade Dell Inspiron 3847 with a full size GPU. Models like NVIDIA GTX 1660 or GTX 1650 Super are good and safe upgrade option and will work with most Mini Tower form factor. However, keep in mind that the type of GPU you can install will depend on the available space in the chassis and the PSU power rating.

Before you begin shopping for a new GPU, it's important to consider the power supply unit (PSU) currently installed. This is because powerful GPUs require more power than the stock PSU can provide, which means that youmay need to upgrade your PSU as well.

According to the manual, the maximum stock power supply available on Dell Inspiron 3847 is 300W.However, to be absolutely sure, check the stock power supply power rating and use one of the GPUs from the table.

The Dell Inspiron 3847 supports Gen4 Intel Core technology. The 4th generation was released in 2013 and under the codename Haswell. They adopt the same 22nm manufacturing process as its predecessor. The performance improvement of Haswell compared to the Ivy Bridge is around 8%. The 4th gen comes with support for new sockets (LGA 1150, LGA 2011-3), DDR4 RAM and a new cache design.

Faster RAM speeds permit your processor to access the data stored inside the memory faster. This is important for the overall speed of your system. The motherboard of the Dell Inspiron 3847 supports RAM speeds of up to 1600 MT/s.

Dell Inspiron 3847 supports Wi-Fi and Bluetooth combo card with the on-board M.2 2230 (Wi-Fi/BT) slot. The card contains a Wi-Fi module that supports various Wi-Fi standards, as well as aBluetooth module. It is small circuit board that is designed to fit into a dedicated slot on the motherboard.

Ports are important and often people don't think about them when buying a PC. For example, if you don't have enough USB ports, using external devices becomes problematic. Before you buy any system, considering your use case, check the number of external devices you are going to use and plan the number of the extension ports accordingly.

The Dell Inspiron 3847 comes with eight USB ports in total. Having more USB ports is always better, but also pay attention to the version of those USB ports. Higher version ports support faster transfer speeds. Unfortunately, this model doesn't come with a USB 3.1 port. If you need a faster connection for your peripherals, like external Solid State Drive, you will need to choose another model.

The DisplayPort (DP) is now the most widely used digital interface for transmitting digital video and audio between display devices and PCs. It is unfortunate to see that the Dell Inspiron 3847 doesn't have one. Check out the HDMI section and make sure that you are at least getting an HDMI port - a good substitution for the DP.

The HDMI port is another digital video port you can use to connect external display. It has very similar capabilities to the DisplayPort with few exceptions. Dell Inspiron 3847 comes with one HDMI 1.2 port(s) on the motherboard. In case your monitor supports another interface, you can always use an adapter.

The SATA port is one of the places where you can connect a stora gedevice. The Dell Inspiron 3847 comes with four SATA port(s). Not enough SATA ports might limit your options for additional storage devices. Think about your use case and decide if the SATA ports provided by this model will be sufficient.

The M.2 PCIe SSD connector in combination with an NVMe drive allows for higher transfer rates, compared to the old SATA interface. In some situations, NVMe device connected to the M.2 PCIe socket can be more than 5 times faster.

The Dell Inspiron 3847 comes with a 300 Watt PSU. Having a power supply with high power rating is important, especially if you are doing upgrade with addtional components, like dedicated GPU and more HDDs. Will this 300 W be enough, it all depends on your specific use. Please keep in mind that some models might have more than one PSU option. Whenever possible get the most powerful one, as it might make future upgrades easier.
