Hello Everyone,

I would like to welcome you to the newest group devoted to the study of
numismatics on Google, numismatics101. I noticed that some people have
joined. Please take time to tell about yourself and what do you
collect.

I will start with me. I'm dorancoins and I am from east central
Illinois. I am a part-time dealer in coins and currency and also I am
involved a lot in numismatic organizations like ANA, Illinois
Numismatic Association, and some of the local clubs in my area. I have
also built websites for the Will County Coin Club of Joliet, IL and the
Wabash Valley Coin Club of Terre Haute, IN, which I am a proud member
of both organizations. I collect anything numismatic, but my specialty
is bi-metallic coins and polymer/tyvek currency. I have been in
numismatics for over 20 years.

OK, I will help get the ball rolling. My name is Jud and I live in
Maine, been a coin collector since age 5, over 50 years ago. I am a
life member of the ANA and the Maine Numismatic Association, regular
member of ANS, TAMS, CWTS (also the book manager), and the Magic Token
Collectors Society...yes! It exists. Besides US coins I also collect
coins of the British Empire, specializing in Australia and New Zealand.
Civil War Tokens, Hard Times Tokens and Maine tokens are amongst some
of my other interests. I have retired early (55) and do a lot of
traveling. I was peeved at RCC being taken over by the trolls, most of
whom seem to have left. I hope this group becomes a haven and succeeds.
I read a number of newsgroups and see no reason for some people taking
exception to this one.

Hello.

I'll join Jud (whom I've known as an online buddy since AOL's Coin and
Currency Board days) in taking up some cyberspace.

My name's Jerry, I live in central NY (there's more to NY State than
NYC), retired from the Navy in 1991, and am a professional handyman.
I've been collecting coins, on and off, since I was about 8. The SQ
Program and the internet kicked by butt royally and really got me into
collecting like never before.

My main numismatic interests are silver (SAEs, commemoratives, and
junk), Jefferson nickels, Statehood quarters, and proof sets. Future
interests are selected gold coins. Currently working on a
Bison/Buffalo theme set.

Good luck with the new board.

Jerry

Hello, Jerry, and welcome to the club. This is an exciting time to be
a collector and (in my case) a dealer with the new quarters, a new
nickel, new redesigned colored money, neat commems, and, coming in
2007, Presidential Dollars. And to think, when I first started
collecting in the 1980's there was all this gloom and doom about the
hobby. Thankfully, none of that has happen.

Hello everyone.
I'll just stick with my anonomous studio handle on the public board.
I've been a long time reader of rec.collecting.coins,
but haven't posted anything in a long time.

I collect almost anything coin.
My main interests are ancient Imperial Roman, but also various
world coins, U.S. types/commemoratives, and various exonumia.

Generally, I am a type collector.
For me it's a better way of expanding my basic knowledge of
all things coin.
Sometimes I just collect something I/others find on the ground.
I always let people know about my hobby, so sometimes they
bring me coins they want to know more about, and I can tell them.

I've only been collecting coins for about 7 years, and I am not a
dealer.
I don't think I've ever sold a coin (although I may have given a few
away
that I had more than 1 example of).
I was secretary of a local coin club of about 65 members for a short
time,
but I don't like the politics that go along with it.
That said, I was able to learn alot from some of the members who took
me under their wing so to speak. Besides doing a lot of research myself
online and reading numismatic books on various topics.

Right now, I'm unemployed, so I don't have much money to pursue
collecting
at the moment, but I'm sure that will be a temporary condition.

dorancoins, the polymer/tyvek coins sound very interesting.
I'm not very familiar with those. Where are they from?

Jud.....what can I say? Wow. 50 years collecting!

Well, Jud - in regards to your question on polymer/tyvek currency, the
polymer part started out in Australia in 1988 and several countries now
have either a low denomination note or an entire series made from the
stuff. The tyvel part comes from the American Bank Note Company, who
printed a series of notes from Haiti in the early 1908's and also a
Costa Rican 20 Colones note in 1983. Polymer was more successful than
tyvek for a lot of reasons. I have a site on Yahoo Groups which has
more info on the subject. It is -

My mistake, I thought the polymer/tyvek were coins.
I am interested in coins made from unusual materials.
The only paper I collect are star notes I find circulating.

Hello,everyone.
I was a long-time reader of Rec.collecting coins and post ther once in
awhile, usually regarding bullion and predious metals.I still read
there, but I limit my postings to a very narrow range now.
I'm not a dealer,but I have been collecting for quite a few years.My
interests are Morgan dollars, almost anything in the seated seated
liberty series, gold and bullion.I have been buying and selling gold and
silver bullion for about 6-7 years and can contribute some
understanding of the bullion market, though I'm far from an expert.

oh,and hi,Jerry.
you should know who this is.
