Hi all,

I hope you had a warm Christmas early this week and I wish you a Happy New Year.

In 2015 and 2016 I helped NumFOCUS to apply for Google Summer of Code (GSoC)
as a mentoring organisation. In 2017, I want to help in other ways
but since NumFOCUS participation on Google Summer of Code is valuable
I want to hand over the administrator seat.
In the previous two editions I volunteer 2-4 hours on the important
weeks of GSoC timeline (i.e. mentoring organization application
deadline, student application deadline, phase 1 evaluations, phase 2
evaluations, and final mentor evaluation).

We have some documentation in place, https://github.com/numfocus/gsoc,
that I started update for 2017 programme, see https://github.com/numfocus/gsoc/pull/150.

If you are interested to help NumFOCUS with GSoC 2017,
please let me know.

Thanks for your time,
Raniere

Hi Raniere,

Thanks for your service on this. Do we have any admins yet? We really need to start collecting proposals.

Can you send me a list of all the mentors last year? I'll send a personal message to them.

Hi

I could also help out. I did the adminstration related stuff for MDAnalysis last year (we participated as under the python umbrella).
I've also mentored a couple of times for different projects and was a GSoC student once. So I'm familiar with the program.
MDAnalysis plans to participate again this year and I'll have time during the critical weeks (application / evaluation weeks)

best Max

Hi Max,

That would be awesome. Raniere, has prepared some docs that are linked in the thread. Let me know if you want to get together and put down a plan to get everything ready.

I had a short look over the docs. They look good.

The sketch of a detailed plan in the proposal template is nice since students usually don't plan ahead enough.
I would like to add some general advice for students though. At MDAnalysis we have some information
that explains the programming experience we expect as well a communication quidelines and two simple
rules when a student will fail the evaluation, 1. have regular contact with mentor 2. have some code
commited to master/develop by the end of the summer. See our Wiki

https://github.com/MDAnalysis/mdanalysis/wiki/Google-Summer-Of-Code#am-i-experienced-enough

I actually liked to use them since they make the decision of pass/fail easier and more transparent for
everyone involved.

About general plans. I usually have time in the evenings after 8 (UTC +1). It would be nice to now who
else would be an admin since we need a minimum of 2 and how you handle communication and
distribution of the slots to the organizations you are an umbrella for. The python org we had last year
had some clear rules and it's own timeline for management.

BTW do you also act as an umbrella for projects that aren't affiliated with numFOCUS?

Sorry for the delay.
I end up without checking my email during the weekend.

I believe that you got the email of the mentors.

Cheers,
Raniere

Hi Max,

Thanks. I liked you suggestions and think they should be included.

Are you available today? Maybe 8 (UTC +1) or 9 (UTC +1)?

If they are related with science, yes.

Yes today at 9 would work. How do you usually meet up?
