Thank you for the feedback. I think some clarification about what Sourceduty is actually selling is important. The NumPy Expansion is a private Sourceduty product containing 100 additional functions designed for NumPy-related workflows. The public Payhip listing intentionally provides a general description rather than publishing the complete function set. The detailed functions are part of the paid product, so publicly disclosing everything would undermine the privacy and commercial purpose of selling the expansion in the first place.
The expansion is not presented as an official NumPy release or as something produced or endorsed by the NumPy development team. It is independently developed material from Sourceduty. There may be functionality elsewhere in the Python ecosystem that addresses similar problems, but that does not mean the functions are identical or that the collection has no value. The expansion is intended to provide an organized set of additional utilities and approaches in one package. More public examples and documentation could certainly help customers evaluate that value without revealing the entire private product.
Regarding the branding concern, the artwork on the current listing is edited rather than simply reproducing the standard NumPy logo unchanged. The product being sold is also the collection of functions and accompanying files—not the logo itself. That said, software licensing and trademark rights are separate matters, and modifying artwork or not directly selling a logo does not automatically determine whether a particular trademark use is permitted. Sourceduty can make the independent nature of the product especially clear through its naming, branding, and an explicit statement that the expansion is not affiliated with or endorsed by the NumPy project.
Finally, I don't agree that independently developing and selling additional functionality for an open-source ecosystem is inherently contrary to the spirit of that community. Open-source projects routinely support larger ecosystems of third-party extensions, utilities, integrations, educational material, and commercial products. Sourceduty's expansion is intended to be an independent addition to that ecosystem, while the underlying NumPy project remains separate and available from its official maintainers.

I understand that perspective, and I agree that community mailing lists should remain useful rather than becoming overwhelmed with repetitive advertising. At the same time, Sourceduty is a for-profit independent developer and business. Developing software products, experimental functions, expansions, and other digital assets for commercial sale is part of what Sourceduty does. Charging for independently developed work is therefore intentional rather than incidental.
I also don't think commercial status automatically makes a contribution irrelevant to a technical community. Open-source ecosystems include nonprofit organizations, individual volunteers, researchers, consultants, and commercial developers. Companies routinely build products and services around open-source technologies, and commercial development can coexist with open-source development. Sourceduty's NumPy-related expansion is being offered as an independent commercial product rather than as an official NumPy or PyData product.
That said, I understand the distinction you're making between participating in the community and using a community mailing list primarily as an advertising channel. If the list's rules prohibit commercial solicitations or the moderators consider a particular message inappropriate, Sourceduty should respect those rules. Being a for-profit business explains why Sourceduty sells its development work, but it doesn't override the policies or intended purpose of a particular mailing list.

For the Expansion for NumPy, the previously modified NumPy-inspired artwork will be replaced with a new independent “N” symbol featuring eight module blocks. The new design does not reproduce or modify the official NumPy logo and instead establishes separate visual branding for Sourceduty's expansion. Product presentation will similarly emphasize that these are independently developed Sourceduty expansions for use with established libraries rather than official releases, modifications, or products endorsed by their respective projects.
This branding change will also be applied to Sourceduty expansions associated with projects in the NumFOCUS family, including NumPy, SciPy, Matplotlib, scikit-learn, and pandas. Rather than modifying or repurposing the official logos of these projects, each expansion will use independently designed Sourceduty artwork while project names can be used descriptively where permitted to explain which library the expansion is intended to support. This approach creates a more consistent Sourceduty product family, reduces the possibility of customers confusing the expansions with official project releases, and better separates Sourceduty's commercial products from the identities and trademarks of the underlying open-source projects.

The Sourceduty Expansion for NumPy uses its own original logo, independent visual identity, and Sourceduty branding to clearly distinguish the commercial product from the official NumPy project. The expansion is not presented or redistributed as NumPy itself, nor is it intended to represent an official NumPy release, modification, or product from the NumPy development team. Instead, “NumPy” is referenced descriptively to identify the established library for which the independent collection of additional functions is intended. The product remains a separately developed Sourceduty offering, with its own artwork, content, packaging, and commercial identity, while the “for NumPy” wording communicates the expansion's intended relationship to NumPy without presenting Sourceduty's expansion as the underlying project itself.

So Ben,Did python actually apply for a trademark? In what country? When? Is there legal paperwork?

Thank you for following up and for clarifying the concern. I understand the distinction you are making between independently developing additional functionality and creating something that could be mistaken for, replace, or conflict with the official NumPy package. Sourceduty has changed the product branding specifically to make that distinction clearer: the official and modified project logos have been removed, Sourceduty's own artwork is being used, and the naming has been changed from constructions such as “NumPy Expansion” to “Expansion for NumPy.” The intention is not to publish a replacement NumPy distribution, create an unofficial version of NumPy, or represent Sourceduty's functions as an official NumPy release. The expansion consists of independently developed function concepts intended to provide additional functionality relevant to NumPy-oriented programming, and the product listing should accurately describe the format in which those materials are actually delivered rather than imply that customers are installing an official or replacement NumPy package. I appreciate the Python 2.8 example because it illustrates the distinction you are concerned about: being permitted to independently develop software related to an established project does not mean that an independent developer should present that software as a new official version of the upstream project. That is also why Sourceduty is moving toward separate branding and “Expansion for …” terminology. I agree that customers and developers should be able to distinguish immediately between the official NumPy package obtained through its established distribution channels and an independent Sourceduty product intended to supplement work performed in that ecosystem.
I also understand your separate concern about the purpose of the mailing list. Sourceduty is a for-profit independent software business, so commercializing independently developed functions, libraries, tools, and other software assets is part of its purpose; however, being a commercial developer does not give Sourceduty an entitlement to use a community mailing list as an advertising channel when that community considers such messages outside the list's purpose. The original messages were intended to introduce development work that I believed might be relevant to people involved in scientific Python, rather than to impersonate NumPy, replace its official packages, or deliberately create confusion in the Python ecosystem. Nevertheless, your explanation makes clear that the issue is not simply whether the products are legitimate commercial software, but whether repeated commercial solicitations belong on a mailing list intended primarily for broader scientific-computing discussion. I can respect that distinction. The feedback has already resulted in clearer product names, independent artwork, and greater separation between Sourceduty's commercial products and the upstream projects they reference, and I will also respect the request not to continue advertising these products through the mailing list. Sourceduty can remain a for-profit developer and sell independent software through its own storefront and appropriate commercial channels without requiring the PyData community mailing list to serve as its marketplace.

Ok Ben,My questions were intended to clarify what is going on. People often claim things that are not grounded and this causes confusion rather than proper explanation.The idea was not for you to do searches - the idea was to figure out what is actually going on...From the links you sent, it seems Numpy was registered in 2026. And matplotlib in 2025. So this is fairly recent. I wonder what the story is there and who pushed for registration. I think this requires a proper explanation from insiders. Is this registration a delay or was there a push for it, and what prompted that action? Also, what other projects are up for registration and what is the process?Hopefully you understand where my questions lead.
