Hi,

I would like to inform you that I will be moving the repo of numexpr in
Google Code (http://code.google.com/p/numexpr) to a github one.
Tentatively, I am using https://github.com/FrancescAlted/numexpr for
this, but I am wondering it it would make more sense to use another one
under, say the PyTables organization (like
https://github.com/PyTables/numexpr). I could continue acting as a
maintainer of the project, but putting it under the PyTables umbrella
seems like a bit more sense to me.

I know that the pandas people are also using numexpr internally, so that
might be another possibility.

Thoughts?

+1 for moving to github

As for the user/org to put it, I would prefer numexpr/numexpr as it would make it more obvious for new users that it is the "main" repository and not a project-specific fork. pydata/numexpr would be my second choice.

Well, provided that pandas is officially using numexpr since 0.13 (and
not only via PyTables), perhaps the pydata/numexpr github repo would
better, yes.

Hello All,

While I am +1 for moving to github,  I am -1 for putting this under any org but a 'numexpr' one, unless that organization is really going to be responsible for further development and maintenance of numexpr.  I like the fact that numexpr is a separate entity.  That said, maybe the pydata folks are really able to take it and make it there own. However, for me from the PyTables side (I can't speak for Antonio, Andrea, Alvaro, Josh, you Francesc ~_~, etc) I think I am a little overwhelmed to take on that responsibility too.

Be Well
Anthony

Thanks guys for your opinions.  My take right now is that, provided that numexpr is in pure maintenance mode for now, and due to the difficulties if finding new maintainers for the project, creating an organization for that is just overkill IMO.

So, I think I will go ahead and will create a new project hanging from github.com/pydata.  The main point is to provide an easy way to receive patches/contributions, and the PR capability in GitHub is the think the project needs the most now.

Hopefully I will do the transition anytime soon.  Will keep you informed.

Francesc

I'm with Gaëtan and Anthony on this one. I don't see any disadvantage with creating a numexpr organisation, who can will be able to contribute as effectively  anyway.

It is official: the numexpr repo has been migrated to https://github.com/pydata/numexpr

I have been able to migrate the code and tickets pretty easily (thanks Arthur Debert: https://github.com/arthur-debert/google-code-issues-migrator).  I also migrated most of the documentation from one wiki to the other.  The best fit I could find for the Google Code wiki idiom in GitHub was 'Creole', but the result is not nice enough.  If any kind soul wants to put some love updating the docs in the new GitHub wiki, tell me a I will grant administrative privileges to you for doing that.

Now, my focus is in fixing some remaining bugs (I applied your fix for #124, Antonio), and then release Numexpr 2.3 as soon as possible.  So if anyone has some pending fixes, please send your PRs (the whole reason for the migration!) as soon as possible.

Cheers,
Francesc
