Hi All,

I set up Numbas along with Christian and  because I am so appreciative
of the excellent work Christian and his team are doing to develop and
enhance Numbas I am interested in finding out who is using the system
and for what is it being used for. I would be very grateful if you reply
with a brief note including the name of your University/college/school
and also if possible what subjects Numbas is being used in.

Thank you,

Bill

Hi Bill,

I am a maths lecturer at Forth Valley College which is based in the central belt in Falkirk.

We have been using Numbas as the primary method of formative and summative assessment for around 5 years now. We use it on the higher national (HN) and national certificate (NC) SQA maths units we deliver on a number of courses including business, science and engineering courses.

We use Numbas on our Moodle VLE where it works pretty well and when assessing we use a ‘hybrid’ model where students are still required to do their working on paper in an invigilated setting. This method of assessment is especially important for us now with the ubiquity of AI.

Other departments in the college are currently looking at using numbas initially as a means of formative assessment and I am helping them implement this.

Our students like the instant feedback Numbas provides and that they can do as many different formatives as they like with each one being different. They also quickly adapt (for the most part) to using Numbas syntax if they have not used a system like this in the past.

Thanks to you and Christian for developing this system which we now use on a daily basis!

HI All,

HE Curriculum Lead and Lecturer in areas of Mathematics and Nuclear Engineering  at the National College for Nuclear Skills at Lakes College, West Cumbria. We have been using NUMBAS (my students insist on calling it Numb As..) for over 10 years I think. We use it for maths, statistics/probability and technical engineering modules across almost all our 14 Foundation and Top-Up Degrees. It is used mainly to provide endless practice and for formative assessment. We did use it during the lockdowns for summative exams but, generally find it difficult to get acceptance from external examiners for its use in summative. There is also the added complexity that it brings for IV and moderation. I love it - it's one of my "go-to" tools for enabling and developing student centred, independent learning.
