r1d3r,
Can you post the exact error message and your inputs so that it becomes clear on what you are doing?

prajwal,
Why would he need putty, when he already has the telnet client.

wD

Since Windows Vista, they no longer have the telnet client installed.
Goto your control panel and choose "Programs and Features". On the
left hand side of the windows you will see "Turn Windows Features On
or Off". From that list choose Telenet Client.

Hi r1d3r,

if i understood it corectly you meant to say that on Run prompt you type
telnet and press enter

and its not connecting.

i understand this as a usual behaviour of telnet comment.

try this

start -> run
telnet site_name
and then press enter

this should allow you to connect only in the case you are allowed to telnet in at the place.

The correct syntax to use telnet is
telnet <host-name> <port-number>
e.g. telnet yahoo.com 80

You won't see anything on the screen unless and until you finish typing, let say
GET / HTTP/1.1

and giving 2 enters after that.

Unlike Linux, 'echo' is set to off by default, meaning that unless
server responds back with interactive session, you can't see anything
on the prompt.
Follow the steps to make it on, for the current session only.

Goto command prompt.
telnet

Welcome to Microsoft Telnet Client

Escape Character is 'CTRL+]'

Microsoft Telnet> set localecho
Local echo on
Microsoft Telnet>

Now, you can type the command to connect to the host.
e.g.

Microsoft Telnet> open yahoo.com 80

HTH.

But, I can see the blinking cursor on the top, right below 'W' of 'Welcome' on first line.
You tried typing after that?

Telnet> o 127.0.0.1

You have telnet server setup on your localhost?
In case, you are not specifying the destination port number, telnet client by default tries to connect to the server on port 23.

Telnet> o 127.0.0.1 80

Similarly, there has to be a webserver running on your localhost to get the reply with that.
