in j2me, you can recv sms on particular port, sender has to send sms on that port.
as sms will recvd by your application, you can build the logic.

PS: As per you not mentioning stuff on BB,A or I

Just like we cant have (Do we?) Self Deleting EMails, I assume we
can't have Self Deleting SMS. Flash SMS are however possible where the
Message will be flashed on to the screen of the recipient once and
then its gone forever(Is it not ?). Just like what you get when you
dial *123#

Just wondering... How exactly does a "self-deleting SMS" work?
And I'm not talking about a 1 time read (Class 0) message... Talking about a message which deletes itself after a given timeframe

We created an android app that has self deleting SMS but since Harshad
mentioned non-smartphone as a pre-requisite, I chose to remain silent.
This functionality can be created but it would be handset dependent
since all manufacturers have different OSes. So no reliable universal
solution is there as of now.

guys there is a bit of confusion,

in the following link it shows list of smsc
which can be used to send free sms but basic question is how do senders number get authnenticated or is any security mechanism at work ????

SMS of class 0 ( i.e. self destructing SMS )  user is given the option to save the sms or not to save it where as in all other type of sms its by default saved in the device. :)

Hi,

Can't we make the SMS intelligent enough to auto delete itself? Or maybe a auto-delete SMS when sent (with a auto delete flag) would auto configure itself to the target device and then call the delete process? Just a thought.

Thanks!

This app is actually not what the original author of this post wanted
to find out.
According to the android market the "Tiger Text" app works only
between mobiles that have this app installed. This is not the simple
messaging service.

Long time back I had tried "Blink SMS" on my old mobile. The SMS used
to flash on the screen and then go away, similar to a warning message
on the mobile. I don't know if that still works.

@"Naga Rohit S": *123# is based on a protocol named USSD. Not SMPP. You have request response model, as well as a push model (from the server side), if I am right.

@"Harshad Mhaiskar": If it is to be independent of the phone and the service provider, then it has to be supported at the SMPP protocol level.  And I don't think there's a feature given in SMPP as of now.
There is something called as an expiration time which can be set on the SMPP packet. But that is generally used by the SMSC to decide how much time to keep it in the SMSC server, if it cant reach the destination mobile.

And another reality is that different SMS's handle the SMPP protocol differently. Like Acision SMSC may handle protocol settings differently than an Ericson SMSC. And even if you set an expiration time, the telecom providers may over ride it, with their own settings. (Not all of them.)

There is something called TLVs in the latest protocol. By latest I mean 6, I guess. SMPP is almost certainly dead.
TLVs - Tag Length Values can be used to define your own variables in the SMPP packet. So, if you want to set an expiration time, you can set it there. And no one else will even know the meaning of it. But the problem is that, at the Client side a normal phone wont know what to do with it. And you will again need a client side app or code to do that for you.

And changing SMPP protocol is one of the toughest things to accomplish. I mean changing is easy, but the adoption of that by phone manufacturers and the SMSC companies and Telcos is almost impossible.

@Blink SMS: Even I am not sure, how much it works now. These type of content, Blink SMS, SMS business cards being sent, Ring tones and all can be sent, by setting some parameter ( similar to MIME type / Content type which you see in web browsers) in the SMPP protocol. Then again the destination mobile should know how to deal with it.

Personally, I feel SMS still has a lot to offer. Due to its sheer simplicity.

~Manu.
