Hi all ,

From a long time I used to think that both Junk Mail & Spam Mail are the mostly the same.
But recently i did found out that they are not same.

Can any 1 help me in understanding the real difference between spam mail and junk mail , I mean in technical terms .
I also got to know something about Bulk Mail is bulk mail the same as spam mail or can be both.
I did try to use google but could not get any good info.

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.

hi ashish,

i'm not sure there is a perceived difference... i have not even heard of a "technical difference", but even if there is... its not well publicised at all.

regarding bulk mail... its good etiquitte to put a "precedence: bulk" header on mailing list mails.... doing this lets the client (gmail, thunderbird, evoution, etc...) treat the mail with the appropriate highlighting etc... and apply any filter you desire. having said that... i don't think most people actually follow the etiquette.

I would also be curious to know where and how you 'found out' that junk mail and spam are not different..

Hello Anish,

Its like a term milk, You call it milk in English, Doodh in Hindi, and other words in other languages, Same way They are the same, GMail Calls it Spam Mail, Hotmail calls it Junk Mail, and Some Clients even call it Trash Mail. Techincally there is no difference between them.

Some thoughts about the differences. Technical differences ? Do these qualify ?

SPAM
- is always unsolicited
- every opportunity to sue the sender if you can find him/her
- will not carry an unsubscribe message. And if it does, please do not click it !
- an 'unsubscribe' link that is clicked provides the list owner with the confirmation that there is a silly human who is reading the mail and is a potential customer for the pill that is being sold.
- usually has spelling errors or the language may be messy
- message will be trying to sell you something or getting to click on a link which will usually be a malicious site
- header info will (usually) provide wrong originating IP
- from or reply to address may be missing

JUNK
- may not be unsolicited
- it can originate on a mailing list like 'null' too when you have a thread that is being dragged too long and you are tired of it, or it is something you know ... thats junk ! Just hit the DEL button.
- may not give you the opportunity to sue the sender !
- an 'unsubscribe' link (if provided) may be legitimate and may work. You have to make a judgment call.
- can be html/text

BULK
The term 'bulk' is a carryover from the world of brick and mortar where the postal authorities struggle with bulk mailings during festivals or when a company is sending out annual reports, and such events.
However in the digital world there is no bulk mail. Spam goes out in bulk. And all mails look alike to the network devices so if I send one mail and you send a 1000 both may be just small blips and will not constitute bulk in real terms.
Bulk mail can be spam or junk or legitimate mail traffic too.

Hi Dinesh ,

Your explanation is quite good.

Well Even I did some google and  found some difference between both junk mail and spam mail.

"Spam usually refers to advertising e-mails sent out randomly to generated e-mail addresses whereas Junk e-mails are usually sent from sites which have a record of your e-mail address either because you have signed onto them using your e-mail as your userid, or because you have ticked the appropriate box on the web-site allowing them to use your e-mail address in this way."

Cheers...!!!

Hello,

Discussions sounds intresting...

I would look at the terminologies as Junk Mail is a subset of SPAM.

SPAM has a wide range ... ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spam )

We take Electronic SPAM when it comes to IT, which is defined as: "Spam is the abuse of electronic messaging systems (including most broadcast media, digital delivery systems) to send unsolicited bulk messages indiscriminately."
While the most widely recognized form of spam is e-mail spam, the term is applied to similar abuses in other media
( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spam_(electronic) )

Also there are various methods called "Spamming Techniques" and the people doing that are known as "Spammers"

When Electronic SPAM comes as an E-mail we may want to call it as "SPAM E-Mail" or a "Junk E-Mail"

I would look at Junk as Waste or any undesired thing or substance (Which is a characterstic by the nature of the content). as of not I have not come across any Electronic Junking or E-Junkers ;) !

What do you think ?

With Best Regards,
Aashish

Personally i am inclined towards Dinesh's summary...

I think Spam is a subset of Junk though... (aka, all spam is junk... but not all junk is spam... eg. i consider the email from my bank trying to sell me insurance as junk - but somewhere, sometime, somehow, i must have subscribed to it... so its technically not "spam" as its not "unsolicited")...

I'm very intrigued by the fact that someone wanted to know the difference... whoever was the originator... *why* did you want to know the difference?
