Hello All,

I'm looking for a laptop who can run 24/7 without any hardware damage & cooling problem. Configuration I'm looking at something like this:

Processor: i7
RAM: 16GB
OS: DOS
Battery Backup: I think this will be configurable with changing battery ... but max backup is good.

Let me know your suggestions. Make with model number will be appreciated.

Thanks & Regards,
AMol NAik

I've been using an Asus K55V with the same config for over a year now. No issues at all. Only recommendation would be to get a different HDD (higher rpm)-- it ships with a default 5400 rpm HDD. It's on 24/7 for weeks but no real heat generated... and it's really cheap as well :)

I can kind of figure out why it will be running 24/7 ;)

Anyway, I will urge you to consider a desktop, rather than a laptop for heavy processing. Advantages of desktops are:
1. Can build our own rig (get best configs, custom cooling solutions etc)
2. Replaceable parts (if you think 16GB is too less, buy 16 more and plug it in)

Cons are:
1. It takes space
2. Need to buy UPS/inverter kind of setup.

If you still prefer laptops there are few options - mainly gaming laptops
1. Alienware -18, 17, 14 (depends on your budget - and they are pretty heavy also)
2. Lenovo IdeaPad Y510p (pretty decent rig, you may want to upgrade the RAM though)
3. Toshiba Qosmio X70
4. MSI GT70 series
5. ASUS ROG G70

Most of the high performance laptops comes up with a decent graphics card. I am not sure whether you are gonna use it(This may be one CON for laptops, but if you are bruteforcing passwords its a plus). Oh, forget about bitcoing mining, FPGA and ASICs have already surpassed GFX cards :P

And if you are planning to have heavy disk IO, moving to SSD is a very good idea.

I am running on a Alienware m14xr2, as I can't carry a desktop around - I tend to change places once in a while :)

Regards,
Dhanesh

No matter what laptop you buy , eventually it gets heating issues.
Avoid high end gaming and prefer a laptop with dual GPU.
And always use a laptop on a flat surface like table to maintain the air flow.
Buy a Laptop cooler.

You can go for HP envy series or a higher range of Dell Inspiron. There is a range of about 70k where HP envy and Inspiron go neck to neck; don't remember the model number thought.

Good luck

HI AMol,

Try alienware. Heard a whole lot of good reviews about it.

Hey Amol,

I won't recommend any laptop for a 24/7 purpose. It requires to be in a 'cool' environment if its a processor/memory intensive work, and even better on a cooling pad. Dell have always been by worst experience when it comes to heat sync.

Also, when you spending that much power, and resource - why not get a cloud instance? I had a similar requirement, and the hunt ended up having it in cloud. Much easier to manage and on demand hardware.

Rest, I am more into Mac as a host OS, so can't help with DOS based Laptops.

Happy hunting.

Hi AMol,

I'm too planning to build a infrastructure for fuzzing.

However, instead of relying on one Desktop or Laptop, I have chosen to build a cluster of old second hand desktops (only CPU Tower).

Here are the few hardware specifications that I will apparently build:

1. CPU: Dual CORE
2. RAM: 2-4 GB
3. HDD: 2 TB SAN
4. Only on LCD
5. Proxmox VE Clusters

It will cost a bit more but I feel its better than a single Computer.

Thanks.

Hi All,

Repeated question so thought of continuing in this mail chain. Not looking for a desktop but a laptop, primarily for fuzzing/multiple VMs/pentesting.

1. Read through the mail chain where it suggests to use SSD but in the long run where fuzzing would have more no. of writes than read won't it affect the life span of SSD? HDD to be used?

2. Need an understanding as to how much could be the difference if i do not have overclocking feature? would you consider it?

3. What difference would it make if i go for a xeon and not core i7 or i9?

4. Quadro v/s Geforce any comments?

5. Any other model which could have the best of all possible, but should be a laptop/mobile workstation?

I am leaving some URL here in the table below for which refers to customising configuration, price skyrocketing towards the right and looking for a balance -

Hi Abeer, been a long time. Hope you are doing well.

Regarding the system that runs 24*7 are possible but depends upon what work you are doing.

You could go with gcp or aws or you could go with hostinger (a cheaper alternative).

And all time favourite ssh should help you fuzz things and talk between cloud VMs flawlessly. Though initial config is a bit of headache.

But if you have made up your mind about the getting a physical device.

Then I suggest the following:
Secondary memory = SSD (for less crashes over long time) and i suggest 1 TB to do great.

Use external SSD or HD to take backup of snapshots and other data.

Processor = xeon

I had to 'init 0' after a week as the system became lethargic. I was running on i7 - 8th gen (over-clocked at 4.5GHz)

More than hardware, you should focus on base OS. Either run stripped debian or Citrix xenserver (I recommend xen) but don't go for win server 20??. You require high level hw config for win (for multiple vm scenario).

Depending upon no. Of VMs you should have somewhere around 64GB or 128GB RAM.
64GB for around 10 to 15 VMs.

If overclocking is not present. And I suppose base clock is running at 3.5 to 4 GHz it will be a bit tedious to run all VMs. And you would at some point of time have to shut down system.

I further strongly recommend xeon with highest L1 cache available.

Another thing. BIOS firmware should be supporting virtualisation and should be selected as per the requirement of yours.

Still I'll suggest that go with a desktop as it will be cheaper and more flexible to work with.

In addition hashcat works better with external G card. Go with Nvidia GeForce 10 series.

Not to forget, desktops have easy maintenance. And laptops are more like single point of failure.

I myself will be building a virtual base for testing and hosting. Her's what I'm doing.

I'll use ACT public my ISP with public IP (they give for free with 1.5K or similar monthly packs)

Desktop with 64 G RAM ddr4
(Coursera Vengeance 3000 MHz)

2TB SSD (internal / NVME type) evo 960
Samsung ssd nvme type does not have a cable that connects to motherboard
It directly connects making it a bit faster.

Cooling:  nzxt (Any model)

Graphics: Nvidia gtx 1080ti (hashcat loves this)

Just to add
Windows 10 installation on above mentioned hw happens in under 3 minutes.
