hi aashish satpute

You can trace your your mobile by IMEI number , if  you approach cybercell and its possible if the IMEI number is not changed | there is always a option to get the traces from your service provider even after your sim is removed but for that proceeding again u need the FIR copy :)

HI ,

you can trace your mobile with IMEI number...by using CDR analysis but for that u required some database sheet and that sheet r available at service provider

by using online trace u will get basic information like service provider name or location bt that location would nt be the current ....

ask your service provider to provide ur last month call data register (CDR) with IMEI details in it. use this IMEI details to trace ur mobile. for that u need FIR for u r lost mobile and ask the police to keep ur IMEI number in surveillance with all mobile service providers in ur state. if the person use ur mobile with another sim card then the respective service provider will inform police that this xyz mobile number has been activated using ur IMEI number. now it became easy to find out the person who is using ur mobile instrument.

@ Sumit : you can not find exact location of your mobile with google map or any services like that unless you have the software
 installed in your mobile.

it is not necessary that u can trace only with IMEI, u can also track with IMSI also,if one is lost other option is available to track ,it is not necessary that u can trace with cdr records.cdr will tell right now current city  or area from which the last phone call or sms have gone
2.from there they find the nearest tower location from whre that number is lastly active, from there ,department monitors on the sms or call from imei or imsi number nearest to that tower and with the little help of social surveillance they track down with the help of hardware trackers.

this is the way investigation goes on for theft mobiles or tracking or tapping of mobiles.

Unrelated but if you have a smartphone consider installing Prey on it. It might come in handy if your phone gets stolen by a not so competent thief.

Good luck with finding your phone.

IMEI - International Mobile Equipment Identity - a unique number given to every mobile phone.  This number identifies that mobile device hardware.

IMSI - International Mobile Subscriber Identity - a unique number given to every SIM card.  These numbers are used by the networks to determine which subscriber is using the service.

Dear aashish satpute,
To trace a lost cell by IMEI is really a challenge for a novice cell
phone user like me, However we have some pretty good options available
to avoid such incidents.

1) We may opt to use 3rd party services such as Nokia
WaveSecure(FreeWare) or McAfee Wavesecure(Shareware).

2) We may take our time and code our own application. For Instance
there are many "Location Based API" - {google} to get our own app
running on cell phone. You may have a look at the 0ne below coded in
J2ME:

IMEI is allotted by Phone Manufacturer (Nokia, Motorola etc.) to Phon whereas IMSI by Service Provider ( Airtel, BSNL etc) to the subscriber.

You will find where your hand set is being operated even in case your No. is being changed.
