Ok, so I've never had to use native DVCPROHD in nuke up to this
point, so here comes the fun. So.....I've been given dvcprohd 1080i/
60 (1280x1080) footage to work with. After I do my comp work on it,
it needs to be delivered at dvcprohd 720p/60 23.98fps, which will
just be a post conversion process after the fact. In shake, if I de-
interlace it, every 4th frame is a double when I render which is not
good. What I am trying to figure out is the correct pulldown
situation in nuke (or shake for that matter). All of their artists
work in AE, which I don't use, and they failed to mention this to me
at the beginning of the project. AE has a button which guesses the
pulldown called "Guess 24Pa", which correctly identifies the dvcpro
pulldown. I know I can render the Interpreted ftg out of AE, but
that's just a work around. Does anyone know the nuke equivalent of
this, or the correct method to get the correct pulldown of dvcprohd?
I know there is a Remove Pulldown node, but I wanted to make sure
there wasn't any funky dvcprohd mojo going on in the bg that will
mess things up @ render time.

Thanks for any help,

Sean

Since you wrote 720p/60 23.98 I'm a little confused, but I'll assume
you meant that this is a 1080 60i to 720 24p conversion, so actually
59.94 to 23.98 with a downrez.

If you, you can tell the pulldown type by moving through frame by
frame, and taking note of which frames are interlaced, and which are
not.

If you end up with a pattern of 5 frames repeated, with a rhythm of 3
full frames then 2 interlaced, then repeat, then you've got a standard
2:3 telecine ... download my Telecine Tools for Nuke from fxshare and
use the Telecine and InvTelecing gizmos to remove and then add back
pulldown.

If, however, you end up finding a 5 frame loop with a single
interlaced frame (4 full, 1 interlace, repeat) then you've got
'Advanced' aka 2:3:3:2 ... and in that case all you really need to do
to convert from 60 to 24 is to pluck out the interlaced frames. I
haven't built a gizmo for that, but you could probably figure it out
pretty easily by looking at the guts of the InvTelecine gizmo ...
essentially removal of 2:3:3:2 is fairly easy, but putting it back is
more complicated.

Otherwise find out what camera it was shot on and check the manual to
find out which pulldown was used. Ideally you always get delivered
the tape with a note saying what cadence is in use.

Thanks Michael. Yes it is Advanced pulldown. As for delivery, they want me to render to DVCPROHD 720p/60 format and change the frame rate to 23.98 in the QT dialogue. I'll have a look at your gizmo tonight. Thanks again.

Yeah, you'll basically have to build a gizmo that pops out every fifth frame, then set the fifth frame that gets popped to the interlaced one.  It's not that difficult, if you can follow along the gizmo and see what it's doing.

Also tell them that they really should be delivering it to you for vfx with pulldown removed. :D

One bit of advice on dealing with footage containing pulldown, and
that is to render out a clean set of image files and do your work from
them. It is entirely possible to work through it in a single pipeline
with inverse telecine and reformat on the render, but it is also very
easy to find yourself a day or two into the process and discover a
problem which will cause a huge headache.

Rendering out clean elements is a very good insurance policy.
Michael's advice should get you there.
