Prime Minister Bob Loughman said Vanuatu’s forefathers did not believe that the country will rely on tourism and the sale of Vanuatu citizenship when independence was gained from Great Britain and France on July 30, 1980 as they highly relied on their land.

Loughman said that is why 1984 was declared the year of cattle, and the Tanna Coffee and Metenesel cocoa project on Malekula were initiated.

He said after Independence, Vanuatu took the direction to rely on tourism but following the economic and financial crisis caused by COVID-19, the government has taken a new policy direction based on the encouragement and the improvement of local production and the value-added products.

Loughman said the government will do its part to implement its policies but farmers also have their part to play.

He said the government has exempted import tax on building construction materials to enable people of Vanuatu to improve their living and on agricultural equipment for the mechanization of the agricultural sector in the country.

The PM said the government will continue to support the farmers and encourage them to plant more to feed first the people of Vanuatu before export. He said the government will continue to find the market of local products at the national and international markets.

“There is a market for black pineapple and Vietnam banana in the U.S. They want us to export three containers per week. Are we ready? Take your knife, axe and spade and use them,” said PM Loughman.

The Prime Minister made the comments yesterday morning during the opening of the first ever biggest market in Port Vila, Vanuatu Fresh Market (VFM).

The official opening was done by the President of the Republic of Vanuatu, Pastor Obed Moses Tallis and the Mayor of Port Vila, Eric-Puyo Festa at Tagabe area.

Loughman congratulated Vanuatu Fresh Market for accommodating all varieties of local products in one roof to enable people to find what they want in one roof.

He appealed to the vendors to sell good quality products.

Vanuatu Fresh Market houses a variety of local products, sewing booths for the mamas and kava bars for the men. VFM also houses a fish market and butchery.

VFM is offering 24 hours service with a rent of a table of 500 vatu per day and refundable deposit fee of VT20,000 per year.

Chief Executive Officer of VFM and former director of forestry, Livo Mele said currently VFM has over 100 members who deposited VT20,000. He said the money will be refundable if a vendor wants to quit VFM.
