The State spent VT350,000 last Friday to pay the Director General (DG) of the Ministry of Finance, August Letlet.

This followed the recent order of Vanuatu’s Court of Appeal following an unlawful search warrant at his home and his office by Vanuatu Police Force.

The search warrant followed an application by the office of the Ombudsman to the court. Under Vanuatu Ombudsman Law, the search warrant must be issued by the Supreme Court, but the warrant against Mr August was issued by only the Magistrate Court.

He challenged the legality of the warrant in the Supreme Court and the court ruled in his favor but was later challenged in the Appeal Court, by the office of the ombudsman.

On 19th November 2021, five judges of the Appeal Court ruled that “the ombudsman, having been unsuccessful in the appeals against both decisions, is to pay a single set of costs of the appeals of VT 175 000 to Mr August”.

Mr August told Daily Post that now that the Appeal Court has granted him costs, he has already written to his legal counsel to file an application of the damages against the office of the ombudsman for its unlawful action.
