77 arrests during Operation Noel
A total of 77 suspects were arrested and detained in cell No. 6 during Operation Noel commencing from December 23, 2021 to January 2, 2022.
Of all offenders, 41 are unemployed and aged between 20 to 48 years. They were arrested for offenses such as intentional assault, domestic violence, possession of illegal drugs, abusive language, threat to kill, criminal trespass, theft, idle and disorderly behavior, obstructing Police officer on duty and intentional homicide.
30 suspects were detained for drug cases (in possession of marijuana) from the age of 19 to 35 years old, 13 for assault, 10 for idle and disorderly behavior, 7 for domestic violence, 7 for abusive language, 7 for damage to property, 5 for threats to kill, 5 for obstructing police officer on duty, 3 criminal past and one breach of bail and one homicide.
Police arrested the homicide suspect and he is now awaiting an application to court for his remand.
Ten suspects on remand at the Correctional Center will appear before the courts in the coming weeks. The dates are yet to be confirmed.
Ten complete cases are ready to go before the courts, but the number of cases will likely increase in the following weeks, depending on investigations.
Two deaths in Port Vila, one in Santo during festive season
The Vanuatu Police Force has confirmed three deaths during the festive season.
Two occurred in Port Vila and one at Big Bay in Santo.
Police in Luganville have arrested the suspect over the death in Big Bay. The suspect is at the Correctional Center awaiting a court hearing on January 13, 2022.
47 suspects, 242 vehicles detained for breaching Traffic Act
A total of 47 suspects were arrested during OPS Noel in Luganville and 242 vehicles were arrested for breaching the Traffic Act.
A total of VT1,069,000 revenue was collected from traffic fines.
Woman dies from domestic violence
A woman from Big Bay in Santo has died from domestic violence. The suspect has been remanded awaiting his court hearing.
52 vehicles confiscated for invalid licenses
The Vanuatu Police Force traffic checks from December 23 to January 2 confiscated a total of 52 vehicles driving because the drivers did not have their licenses, and also for safety purposes. They were released the following day
Nine others have minor accidents involving careless driving. Acting Commander South, Superintendent Glen Mahina, conveys his appreciation to the people of SHEFA, TAFEA and Port Vila for their efforts in ensuring a peaceful celebration.
