[MEDIA ADVISORY] Journalists, press freedom advocates call justice for slain radio broadcaster Percy Lapid
A year after the killing of radio broadcaster Percival “Percy Lapid” Mabasa, the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) and the Freedom for Media Freedom for All (FMFA) network, and the College Editors Guild of the Philippines (CEGP) together with press freedom and human rights advocates, urge the government to serve justice and accountability.
Lapid was gunned down while on his way home in Las Piñas on October 3, 2022. Last June 23, the Las Piñas City RTC sentenced three Bilibid gang leaders who pleaded guilty as accessories to the murder of Lapid. On August 14, self-confessed gunman Joel Escorial also pleaded guilty to the lesser offense of homicide instead of murder.
NUJP, FMFA, and CEGP shall mark the first anniversary of Lapid's murder by holding a short program in front of the Department of Justice (DOJ) on Tuesday, October 3, at 10:00 AM. The union reiterates that the Philippines remains to be a dangerous country for journalists, and that justice should be served for all murdered journalists.
Media coverage is highly requested.
