Hi all,
We haven't received any new references for 8 days, so here's a last
call for references before the release process can be resumed. Please
reply if you have any urgent concerns or references that you'd like to
be added to the book.

To reiterate, if there are any issues at all or references that need
to be added, please reply to this post as soon as possible. If no one
raises any issues for a day or two, I'll assume that no one has any
concerns or any references they'd like to add. Please also reply if
you need more time to compile your references; that's fine - but if
there's no further activity, we can resume the publication process.

Thanks!
-Rishi

Hi All!

The interactive floor has no references because this is my own custom build, I can only reference what I said in the tutorial :-D
I can give this link to the video:
Multitouch SA - Multitouch Interactive Floor: http://www.multitouchsa.co.za/?p=39

Here are my references for the C# / .NET section: (Again, not a lot of references due to mostly custom built stuff)

1. Multitouch SA - CsTI : http://nuigroup.com/forums/viewthread/270/
2. .NET Framework - http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/netframework/default.aspx
3. .NET Framework - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.NET_Framework
4. Vista shipped with .NET - http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/netfxsetup/thread/b1363be6-91c6-4c57-bd5e-08af63567faf
5. WPF - http://windowsclient.net/wpf/default.aspx
6. MultitouchVista (started by Daniel D) - http://www.codeplex.com/MultiTouchVista
7. Microsoft Surface and the .NET Framework - http://weblogs.asp.net/scottgu/archive/2007/05/30/microsoft-surface-and-wpf.aspx

Hope that helps!

Hi all,

I will check the FTIR references soon.

Whats the current status regarding the images used in the book? And is
there also a WIP version of the book online?

Hi

What do you mean with WIP? There's only the PDF version online - if you are asking this...

And also what do you mean with "status regarding the images"?

Hi

WIP means Work in process/progress.

The PDF file which is online ( http://nuicode.com/attachments/download/115/Multi-Touch_Technologies_v1.01.pdf
) is still the old version from June containing the issues which I
complained about in this mail:
http://groups.google.com/group/nui-multi-touch-book/browse_thread/thread/2c7f43eb8b1bdda0?hl=en
As stated in that same mail, some of the pictures (in my chapter) have
been replaced with wrong pictures. Also some of the pictures in the
book are probably copyrighted and shouldn't be included in the final
version.

Hi

We asked every author to take care of this (eg send relevant references).

Please let us know which picture(s) your chapter has issues with. There's another opportunity that you send the original version of your chapter and we merge this chapter directly to the book, so you guarantee that your references are intact.

Hi,
I know that I wasn't able to turn in my chapter regarding UX and HCI for the book, but if you need additional resources, you can find my references somewhere in the NUI group forum and the wiki, I think.

Here is the most recent edition (the one that was sent to Lulu and
then pulled), but without the updated references:
http://groups.google.com/group/nui-multi-touch-book/web/Multi-Touch_Technologies_LuLu_ISBNFinal.pdf

Please identify the pictures that are copyrighted or wrong, and what
they can be replaced with (if any). If there are remaining references
to be added, please send them. I can't finalize the reference
numbering and add it to the ID document until we have the FTIR
references - so that the reference numbering can be continuous
throughout the book.

All we need at this point is the Laurence's final FTIR references and
any pictures with issues to be identified - please do so as soon as
possible.

Thanks,
Rishi

nit sure what pictures were talking about exactly if you guys need
diagram pics for any of the approaches, I made some myself a while
ago. you can use the ones on this page without any copyright issues:

Hi all,

Please read my comments on the following sections (1.2 and 1.3).

1.2 Introduction to Optical Techniques

Page 3
- add abbreviations in the introduction, that way you do not have to
do it further in the document (FTIR, FI, RI, DI, LLP, DSI etc).
- Infrared (IR in short) -> Infrared (IR)
- "It is a range of wavelengths longer than visible light, but shorter
than microwaves." <- wtf? is this trivia?
- "By removing the infrared filter and replacing it with one that
removes the visible light instead, a camera that only sees infrared
light is created." <- "By removing the infrared filter and replacing
it with a visible light filter (cut off filter or bandpass filter),
the camera will only see infrared light"

Page 4
- Remove abbreviation introduction (it is redundant) at the top
- Remove "Most of the time"
- (Bullet 1) You do not need "brighter than normal IR LEDs", I used el
cheapo no brand IR LEDs for my first FTIR screen. However, you can
recommend using bright IR lights will improve the performance (OSRAMS)
- it's -> it is (do not use: don't it's wasn't etc. in books or
papers)

Page 5
- Radiant intensity: 80mW minimum? Who decided this?
- Angle of FTIR: I completely disagree with this part. I used el
cheapo LEDs with an angle of (60 degrees) and expensive Osrams SFH485
(40 degrees).
- Angle of DI: Wide angle means that the illumination intensity goes
down, so I do not agree with this part either.
- "For the DI setup, many setups bump into problem of hotspots. In
order to eliminate this, IR light needs to be bounced off the bottom
of the box when mounted to avoid IR hot spots on the screen." <- I
disagree, it is all a matter of using the proper diffuser/screen
materials and the angle of these IR lights. Also if you place the
diffuser on the bottom of the screen it will eliminate all reflections/
hotspots. If you have proper diffuser material (not just tracing
paper, but some synthetic material such as polyester) you can just put
the diffuser on top of the screen.
- "Also, a band pass filter for the camera is required - homemade band
pass filters such as the exposed negative film or a piece of a floppy
disk will work, but they’ll provide poor results. It’s always better
to buy a (cheap) band pass filter and putting it into the lens of the
camera.". <- A floppy disk is just nonsense, that is the same theory
as the "black garbage bag" someone recommended on the forums. Those
materials just 'darken' the image, they do not 'filter' the light. And
a good band pass filter usually is not cheap.
- "We need just the opposite" <- Replace... its a book, not a blog
post so choose your words carefully.

Page 6
- Remove the (IR) at Lens type.

Page 7
- Perhaps remove the reference to the Sony Sensor and replace the
current bogus picture with a (non-copyrighted) picture that shows an
Spectral Sensitivity Characteristics example based on the one of Sony.
- Change the caption of the image... because the information does not
suits the Figure.
- Besides the fact that its a bit redundant to mention black negatives
and floppy drive magnets, I do not agree with this. I recommend
removing this part or at least the one that mentions floppy drive
magnets. Also, it does not state how you can get hold of 'black
negatives'.

Page 9
- First line suggests that we named it FTIR... so better use another
opening sentence.
- Also add the references to Jeff's paper here.
- You can add the Wikipedia reference to the 3rd sentence (Total
Internal Reflection describes..)
- Fix you reference style in the introduction
- Reference to Snell's law (or at least a footnote for additional
info?)

Page 10
- If you want you can add a link to my blog regarding the acrylic
treatment part.
- "even wet sandpaper" -> "wet sandpaper"
- "won't" -> "will not"

Page 11 (This section seems all new for me, I do not remember writing
this much about Compliant Surfaces)
- Perhaps add a reference to Harry's howto guide (silicon)
- "rubbers, lexel, and various brands of RTV silicone" Lexel is a
brand name I think so it should be Lexel with a capital.
- "three ‘rubber’ materials mentioned earlier...they all have"
- Do not mention Tinkerman without a proper reference (how is the
reader suppose to know who Tinkerman is).

Page 12
- Do not use "I" or "my" and minimize the use of "we" and "you".
- "Seems to react better for dragging movements (at least in my
experience)" <- ...
- Christopher who? my next door neighbor? reference...

As seen above, there are still many issues with the nuibook (and it is
not just related to referencing but also the writing). For now I have
only checked the sections 1.2 and 1.3 because those are the sections
to which I contributed content. Large parts of my initial work seem to
be rewritten, however not every part has been rewritten well. I do not
know if this section also reflects the rest of the book but this is
really a concern.

If this was just a tip of the iceberg I do not know whether I still
want to be co-author of this book. I am not willing to put much more
effort in the book and correcting stuff (simply because I do not have
the time). If we can not assure the quality of all of the content, I
would like to have my name removed from the nuibook.

Kind regards,
- Laurence Muller

I agree that there are large quality controll/editing issues left for
this book to be considered "publishable". That said, I still think it
can help some people just starting out get a good overview. Do we
really need to publish it with ISBN and everything? we can still find
somewhere that will print large pdf files for people that don't want a
digital copy, and thinking of it more like a work in progress could
let us avoid some of the issues were talking about right now.

I do think that we have alot of editing left to do, which involves
much more than typesetting and compiling the information provided by
the people writing the sections. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to
undermine any of the hard work done and great initiative by people to
bring this information together i one place.

I feel like we're in such a big hurry to get this out the door!
writing and editing takes a long time, its not something you do in a
week or even a month...especially when you have so many different
people involved and none of tehm work full time on the project.

Also, I would like to suggest that the book point out more
specifically, which author contributed to which section.

Anyways...my 2c

I agree as well. Everything seems very rushed, and I'd like to even
rework the Flash section because there are parts mentioned in it that
don't even have to be done anymore. If one is using CCV then the data
can go straight to Flash, does Touchlib still have a following? but you
still need the FLOSC bridge for reacTIVision.

returnBlobs(); doesn't need to be 'added' because it's now contained in
the TUIO library in Touchlib.

The App demo doesn't even do anything and the display of code on pg 53
isn't tabbed out properly.

And what about this LUX i keep hearing about every now and again, a new
full flash library.
Does anyone know information about that?

Chris
