Good news for NetCATians. Grab some CAT points by reviewing tutorials. As per todays status report of Jiri, tutorial review[1] has started.
All the best.

Hello NetCAT team,

I am sure you are impatiently awaiting this week's newsletter, aren't you? ;-)

1. Overall summary

Activity in the JavaOne 2012 [1] week dropped significantly. On average there were ~10.3 new bugs submitted by 30 participants and ~14.9 e-mails sent by 34 participants on a daily basis which represents roughly a half activity of the week before. NetBeans 7.2 Update 1 was released yesterday and we will soon need your help with testing Update 2 in different environments. From this week tribes should start updating their obsolete test specifications. Besides, we also need your help with review of documentation. As usually we have got a plenty of useful feedback. For example, several people quickly helped verify a potential stopper in Installer on Mac OS X, reproducible crash was filed or weird GlassFish startup problems showed up. On the other hand some participants appreciated the new website design and features of the brand new HTML 5 project type. Let's go into detail now.

2. Important stuff
  • We thank all 6 participants who participated in the fire drill and immediately verified smooth installation of 7.3 Beta on Mac OS X. It seems like the interrupted installation was an isolated problem of just one user. Luckily! :-)
  • Aligned with 7.3 Beta release and JavaOne 2012 conference we slightly redesigned netbeans.org website with regard to layout, colors and content. Two participants like the change and nobody expressed dissatisfaction. So far.  ;-) If the site looks strange on your screen, hit Ctrl+F5 to refresh your browser's cache.
  • Last week tribes were expected to finish review of existing test specifications. 5 tribes (API Support, Debugger, Maven, PHP and CVS) assembled their comments in a common Google spreadsheet [2]. What about other tribes? Next, we should address all the issues and this should ideally happen by October 21st. Thanks to all tribes who take part in this important task!

  • David Heffelfinger warned that NetBeans failed to start his GlassFish 3.1.2 server. Duane Phinney also confirmed it but suggested to make sure that Java executable is configured correctly. Can you please file this David as soon as possible?
  • We are very delighted by the positive response to the new HTML 5 features in 7.3 both among NetCAT participants and JavaOne attendees too. We realize how Chrome integration and JavaScript debugger in HTML 5 projects is cool  :-) and we work hard to add it to PHP projects too. BTW, we have compiled a brand new test specification [3] for Web Client tribe. Enjoy it!

  • After the sanity test Maven tribe decided to remove [4] one obscure test case. BTW, Hermien Pellissier reported that classes from another test root are not executed (#213978) already 4 months ago.

  • Vidhyadharan Deivamani discovered a 5 years old magazine about advanced profiling which had several hard to read sections (#219543) due to improper coloring. We will take care of it of course.
  • According to Alied Pérez Martínez it's not possible to Undo edits in a Visual Designer class with some guarded blocks of code. Alied promised to file this against JavaME.
  • With a short delay we would like to ask you for help with review of tutorials [5]. This is an excellent opportunity for those of you who like experimenting and want to learn something new. The point is to make sure that 7.2 documentation is valid for 7.3 too. If you are interested, please grab your tutorial today!  :-) See the Wiki for more information.

3. Bug hunting
  • Viggo Navarsete and Marcin Starnacki discovered a bug in external browser integration causing IDE to crash when JavaScript Test Driver was touched (#219304). Good catch guys!
  • Geza Buza claimed to randomly face a performance issues with Subversion (#219388). The uploaded profiler snapshot does not confirm any high CPU usage or infinite loop on SVN commit though. More snapshots would help here!
  • Manikantan Narender Nath found out that JPA completion for named queries does not list properties from @MappedSuperClass and it also displays invalid warning (#217088).
  • Anton V. Kirilchik wanted to reformat all his project source code but received org.openide.text.DataEditorSupport$Env$ME instead (#219275). We are looking into this not processed UserQuestionException with more than 200 duplicates.
  • Best bug reporter of the previous week was Javier Ortiz who reported 13 bugs.
  • In total 8 high priority bugs were filed however only one was fixed.  :-( 2 were closed without resolution.
  • If you also couldn't use simplified bug submission form (#218729) due to the site rejecting your login, it's resolved already. Please log out, go the form, login and then give it another try.
4. Statistics
Bugs submitted:    346 (+72)
Open bugs:            245 (1/19/205/21)
E-mails:                  583 (+104)
Best regards,
-Jirka
