Eh up folks,

I have begun the search for somewhere for our annual Hogmanay getogether.  The target area has been fairly widely defined as "Highland Perthshire".  However, I have thus far only found two options on this basis, which are listed below.

Morenish, Loch Tay: https://www.ownersdirect.co.uk/accommodation/p8124473, sleeps up to 22, £2074.  Some flexibility on dates.

I would be more than happy with either, as both look very acceptable to me.  The size difference is probably the main decision point as far as I see it.  However, it is obviously preferable to have more choice than just the two.  If neither option is quite right (and I do think I've been fairly exhaustive in my search, but maybe I am just being thick) then my initial searches suggest that shifting the search a little to the west (i.e. Argyll) would yield a number of additional options.

Cheers,

Grinner

Seconded and thirded for Morenish (loads of space and hopefully better dates - 29th would be a late start).

Liking the positive thoughts on Morenish. If I were to book would 27th December to 2/3rd January make sense? Cost seems to be the same for 6 or 7 nights btw.

I am away over the weekend but it would be excellent if we could be sorted next week: things will not stay unbooked for ever.

Cheers,

Morenish looks great. The other place looks good too however I’d discount it because of the rubbish start date.

Cheers,
Will

I think we should just book the one at Morenish as it isn't that much more expensive and it looks fantastic!

I think that is enough positive noises that I will look to book Morenish over the weekend as it would be a shame to miss out.

Morenish looks awesome (in particular the BBQ :-)) so thats two yeses from us.

As those of us south of the border only get the 1st as a bank holiday we'd probably plan to leave on the 2nd so not sure we need the night of the 2nd as well.  Its currently showing as available from the 26th or is that too early for people?

All,

As I am waiting for fellow rail enthusiasts to arrive in the pub* I used the wonders of free wifi to just go ahead and book. The dates are 27th - 3rd but of there was a general feeling in favour of Housechild's Boxing Day suggestion them I expect this could be arranged, although personally the dates booked are my preference.

The owners have 24 hours to respond to my request, which included details about what lovely people we are.  Assuming we pass the the test monies will be requested.

Cheers,

Grinner

All,

Reply below. Cost is somewhat more than expected.

Good morning Graham, thanks for your enquiry.
I'm afraid we can't accept your booking request at present... the Hogmanay prices as well as others for later next year haven't been finalised, therefore the owners direct page hasn't got the correct price - currently we charge £3,500 for Hogmanay week, and re likely to increase slightly for 2018/19.f you are still interested then I suggest contacting me via the Morenish Fb page, and I'd be pleased to correspond with you.
Thanks again for your interest.

All,

I have now heard back from Alistair at Morenish.  The cost would be £3650 for a week.  He has also asked if we would consider moving the date back to the 29th.  I have replied to say that would not be ideal, and also that we would need to consider things given the price increase.  Further communication has subsequently confirmed that it would have to be the 29th.

I would note that all other places I have looked at specify Saturday to Saturday, and so I think this is probably going to be an issue anywhere.

Thoughts are welcomed.

Cheers,

Grinner

Hmm that's not looking quite as good as we thought.

We've just been having a bit of a look for any alternatives and have found a couple:
https://www.character-cottages.co.uk/all-properties/the-highlands/bunrannoch-house#key-features - can be booked Friday-Friday, nice looking house but not the best location for hill walking, pet friendly, sleeps 16, £399 per night
http://www.jessiemacs.co.uk/ - independent hostel but looks quite nice, is a reasonable location and may have more flexibility on dates. Possible to rent the whole place, sleeps 21, pet friendly, £300 per night

Not able to check availability on websites that far ahead, would need to contact owners directly if we might be interested.

Thanks for looking for more places, Hannah.  It looks to me that Bunrannoch will not be any cheaper than Morenish though: it is £3605 for a week in high season, and I expect Hogmanay will also be high season, if not higher season.

I'd be fine with Jessie Macs, it looks like a top of the range hostel, and does have some double rooms for those who win the competition to get them.

Grinner

All,

As a further (partial) update, I e-mailed Jessie Macs yesterday to enquire about availability and prices.  However they have not yet got back to me, and so I will follow this up with a phone call tomorrow to see what the score is if I have still not received a reply.

Eh up,

I am just off the phone from Jessie Macs hostel. They are still available for our preferred dates (27th to 2nd). The cost for this (5 nights) is £1500.  The way that the conversation unfolded meant that we have a provisional booking, but no money has yet changed hands. Given that more house-like properties seem to be quite strict on the Saturday to Saturday rule, and given that in any case costs seem to be well  above  3 grand I reckon we should go for it.

Cheers,

Grinner

Apologies for the superfluous follow-up e-mail, but I thought it was worth also putting the link in:

It does look a very nice place, with a good selection of small rooms. Depending on numbers we'll probably be able to accommodate most couples in their own rooms.

I have confirmed the booking.  The total cost is £1500 for 27th to the 2nd, which is five nights for the price of six. Who says I can't negotiate!  Er well actually the original price was a mistake but the lady decided to stick with it.

The deposit is £400, which I have now paid. Can I ask for a somewhat arbitrary  £30 from each adult* who feels like it to cover some of this?

Hopefully no further e-mails now required on this subject for many months, but Laura is correct, I think we are due a Newtonmore trip for 2019.  Also I note Dunkeld is on the sleeper service for those for whom this may be of interest.

*i.e. no charge for infants.

Cheers,

Grinner
