Eh up,

A few thoughts have begun to turn towards plans for walking trips in
Easter and late May (half-term week) 2013. Whilst this may seem a
long way off, places tend to get booked up quite quickly at those
times of year, so it might well be worth setting things in motion
ahead of time. Accommodation-wise the thought for both trips is to
look for something cottage-like, i.e. that we can have sole occupancy
of, hopefully of a similar standard to recent trips to Newtonmore /
Laxford Bridge. This does mean it will be quite number-dependant so
it seems like a good idea to get an idea of numbers now so that I can
start looking.

For the Easter trip It is suggested that the area roughly defined as
the Rough Bounds of Knoydart* would be a good location for a trip.
Certainly I have several Corbetts that need bagged round there, and
Will needs to pick up a couple of the higher hills….oh it looks quite
pretty too! This area is only half an hour’s drive north of Fort
William so not to hard to reach whether by car or via Fort William
railway station, even for those of you in the deep damp south.

The dates in question would be Friday 29th March – Monday 1st April
2013, so just the three nights. Any takers for an Easter trip along
those lines at this juncture?

Housechild is arranging the late May trip, and will be in touch at
some point with details of the plans that are afoot for that.

Cheers,

Grinner

* also described as: Northern Lochaber / West Inverness-shire / Lochs
Quoich & Arkaig / Section 10 of Munro’s Tables / OS Sheet 33 / the
area bounded by the A830, A82 and A87, etc. you get the picture.

All,

I'm in for the Easter Trip but Late May will be an issue

We have set a date of the 01st June 2013 for our wedding :-)

Wedding will be in Great Cheverell, Wiltshire. Please come, it wouldn't be the same without you all!

Consider this to be a save-the-date card!

Andy

Cool, congratulations Andy!

The above notwithstanding, this thread is for those interested in the
Easter trip to northern Lochaber in 2013, thus far I believe the
following 5 people have expressed interest:

Me,
Andy,
Will,
Housechild, and
Vicky.

You will note that I am not a fan of "thread drift"; the subject line
is there for a reason people! ;-)

I'm interested but as usual, I don't handle email/dates overload very well...  how many trips are we talking baout here? anyone care to summarise some event dates? do we have a common calender anywhere?

This thread is for the Easter trip. This is only one trip. Easter
next year is, as stated further up the thread (and in many
commercially available calendars) on Friday 29th March – Monday 1st
April 2013. A trip to Section 10 of 'Munro's Tables' is proposed.

Calendars may be purchased via replies to the thread entitled
"Calendars for 2013". other threads may or may not exist for other
trips, stag dos and weddings however this thread need not concern
itself with such matters.

I hope this clarifies matters. I am not in a bad mood today, though I
appear to be sending e-mails that suggest otherwise!

Regards,

Graham

So for next years Easter Trip, 29 March to 01 April 2013. Would you propose to Bothy or Camp, or allow provision for both.

I would also like to add Meloo to the list. She quite likes the region of Knoydart / Northern Lochaber /  West Inverness-shire / Lochs Quoich & Arkaig / Section 10 of Munro’s Tables / OS Sheet 33 / the area bounded by the A830, A82 and A87.

Kind Regards

The suggestion was actually to look for something more like a cottage
(a la Newtonmore last year), but many of them take "well behaved"
dogs, so I'm sure this can be arranged.

A cottage would be great but please don't let Moo influence the choice of cottage, however it would be a 'nice-to-have' feature in Corporate Speak.....

Hello,

I'd be interested in an Easter weekend.  29 Mar to 01 Apr as stated previously.  I will put in my calander.

Are there any proposed trips for any of these dates please?

  • 16/17 March
  • 26 - 28 April - three days!
  • 14 - 17 June - Small Isles
  • 20/21 July
  • 27 - 29 September - three days!
  • 26/27 October

Cool, I'll add you to the list. I should really start looking for
places soon! At the moment we are as follows:

Me,
Jon,
Will,
Housechild,
Vicki,
Andy (and Meloo)
Laura

So I will begin to look for places in Northern Lochaber that can take
8-10 people and are dog-friendly. My aim is basically to get
somewhere booked before Christmas. To avoid filling up people's
inboxes I will from hereon in restrict e-mails regarding accommodation
selection to those attending the trip (i.e. those listed above).
Should the place picked have a couple of spare beds they will of
course be advertised to the group as a whole. :-)

Cheers,

Grinner

Eh up,

I have begun to look for places that may be suitable for Easter 2013.
On the basis of the list below (8 people + 1 dog), I am first looking
for places that can sleep 8-10 people.

Me,
Jon,
Will,
Housechild,
Vicki,
Andy, Andy's missus (and Meloo if possible),
Laura,

At the moment here is a first pass on some options. I will admit that
I may have "stretched" the search area somewhat, as the actually
specified area isn't really very populated. Firstly then, a couple of
hostel options (unlikely to be dog-friendly).

- One option that I thought I'd mention is the Glenfinnan Sleeping car
(http://www.glenfinnanstationmuseum.co.uk/sleeping_car.asp). Sleeps
10, and costs £120 per night for exclusive hire.

- The Great Glen Hostel (http://www.greatglenhostel.com/) is an ideal
location, but at 50 beds we'd never fill it. Could get
"exclusive-use" room hire though, and I doubt it ever that busy.

Onto cottage / large house / lodge / villa type accommodation… Okay I
was intending to fill this section with a few options, but haven't
managed to yet, despite several searching attempts over the weekend.
Maybe I am just being rubbish, but all places I can find appear to
only run Saturday-Saturday, with short breaks permitted only outwith
the high season (i.e. excluding Easter). Anybody else found anything?

Personally I would be happy with a hostel...

Cheers,

Grinner

Laura,

Yes you did send that, twice in fact ;-P

I don;t know if it's available, so it probably isn't, but if I get a positive response I'll e-mail them and ask.  It's probably stretching the defined boundaries somewhat however, but would be a cool place to stay.

All,

Regretfully, the sleeping car is already booked up for the Easter
period. Must be born in mind for a future trip though as it seems a
popular option!

We are now up 10 people:

Me,
Jon,
Will,
Housechild,
Vicki,
Andy,
Tallie,
Laura,
Mark,
Hannah.

Will I contact the Great Glen Hostel or does anybody have any other
ideas? It’s not as exciting a place to stay, but is probably better
located for the Arkaig / Rough bounds hills that were specified in the
output specification for this trip.

Grinner

I will keep on searching, if others are emailing could we ask about dogs (we may have 2 by easter...) but no worries if it isn't possible.

Old byre looks good.  The other one could be tricky in that we,d need two but there seems to be a big cost difference suggesting half of us would be in nicer accommodation.

Good stuff on finding places, but you should note that the Old Byre is
on Knoydart (in Inverie to be precise). That means that we would need
to either walk in or get the ferry from Mallaig. Times of the ferry
are as follows (http://www.knoydart-ferry.co.uk/knoydart-ferry-timetable.html):

dep Mallaig 1015 or 1415, arr Inverie 1100 or 1500
dep Inverie 1100 or 1500, arr Mallaig 1145 or 1730

Ferry only runs Mon, Wed and Fri (we’d need to check that includes
Good Friday and Easter Monday, but I would suspect so).

Anyway, I've been really keen to get Inverie for some time now
(several Corbetts and allegedly a great pub) but the ferry is a
complicating factor, also there is not much Munro-bagging potential
(for those who are interested in that sort of thing).

Ardechive (Loch Arkaig) has none of the above issues. I’m certainly
not ruling Knoydart out (‘cos I really want to go there!), but in the
interests of fairness to all am just pointing out the issues…

Cheers,

G

Camping anyone?

Graham Lewis

I'd prefer a hostel over camping. It might be worth considering the
Invergarry Hostel over the Great Glen Hostel as the location might be
slightly better (well there is a pub and village within walking
distance).

Though thinking through the camping option, we could have six of us in
a cabin and three camping (i.e. the doggy people + 1 volunteer), if we
were to go somewhere like this:

http://www.lochy-holiday-park.co.uk/pine-lodges-in-fort-william

But would be slightly tricky juggling separate accommodations, and I
can't find any of this type of place (campsite + cabins) nearer to the
target area than the Fort itself.

How about a hybrid solution using the Great Glen Hostel for those
without dog(s) (there appeared to be spaces for 4males and 2females
when I checked this morning) and Faichemard Farm Campsite for those
with dogs (website says open April to October but I checked and
they'll be open for Easter and should be able to fit a two person tent
without booking)?

There's probably about 6km between the two places.

I like the camp / hostel hybrid solution, with the minor change that I
think I'd prefer the Invergarry hostel (if it has beds). It is
actually only about 1 km from the campsite Housechild suggests. No
online booking available for Invergarry though so I can't check
without e-mailing them.

Housechild has used one of the online hostel booking services which
suggests that Invergarry doesn't have enough spaces for the 7 spaces
(4 males, 3 females) we require. I suggest we book Great Glen, with
Andy, Tallie and the dugs being 6 km up the road.

Is it worth calling the Invergarry hostel to check if they have space? Sometimes places don't put all their beds on Hostlworld or wherever. The great Glen Hostel doesn't really have much within walking distance from memory so might be a bit dull for three nights in a row....if we do end up there might an overnight bothying trip in the middle be of interest? I think there's an MBA bothy somewhere Loch Quoich-ish

As much as I am enjoying discussion about the Easter trip, it is making me rather envious as I don't think I will be able to make it.

Earlier this evening I spoke to Invergarry and they have spaces for Fri and Sat but not Sunday.  So we could stay there and move else where for Sun?

Tomorrow I'll see if there is anything closer to Fort William available unless people are opposed to this idea?
