INADECUADO

Durante el tiempo que duró el escándalo de Mónica Lewinsky, se habló mucho en Estados Unidos de las conductas “inadecuadas”. El propio presidente Bill Clinton admitió que su relación con la señorita Lewinsky lo había sido; se dijo que el Starr Report había tratado de un modo “inadecuado” el escándalo material; la cinta de video de la declaración de Clinton ante el tribunal se proyectó, según se dijo, en un día “inadecuado”, por ser Rosh Hashanah, el comienzo de las fiestas sagradas del judaísmo y, de hecho, así fue. Aunque no todos estamos siempre de acuerdo en lo que es o no inadecuado, los ángeles tienen una definición muy práctica, a la que podemos recurrir en caso de duda: la conducta adecuada es aquella que domina el comportamiento inspirado en la decencia y, según el diccionario, “la propiedad en la conducta y el lenguaje; la observación de los requerimientos de la modestia”. Cuando tenemos que elegir cómo comportarnos, si de verdad se puede decir que actuamos con modestia e integridad – con el propósito de apoyar la verdad y la justicia -, entonces estaremos comportándonos “adecuadamente”, aunque los demás no se sientan a gusto. Sólo así podremos atraer la atención de otras personas, sin perder el su respeto.

During the period of the Monica Lewinsky scandal, there was much talk in the U.S. of "inappropriate" behavior. President Bill Clinton himself admitted that his relationship with Ms. Lewinsky had been, it was said that the Starr Report had treated in an "inappropriate" way the material scandal; the videotape of Clinton's statement before the court was projected, as was said, in an “inadequate” day, being Rosh Hashanah, the beginning of the sacred festivals of Judaism and, indeed, it was. Although we not all always agree on what is and is not inappropriate, angels have a very practical definition, which we can use in case of doubt: the appropriate behavior is one that dominates the behavior and decency inspired; according to the dictionary, "property in behavior and language, observing the requirements of modesty." When we have to choose how to behave, if indeed we can say that we act with modesty and integrity - with the purpose of supporting the truth and justice - then we are behaving "properly", but others do not feel comfortable. Only then can we attract the attention of others, without losing their respect.
