Why more and more people are tuning the news out: ‘Now I don’t have that anxiety’
  • 40% of people across nearly 50 countries say they sometimes or often avoid the news, up from 29% in 2017; the figure is 42% in the US and 46% in the UK, with negative impact on mood the top reason.
  • Studies show high news exposure, especially via TV, social media, and graphic imagery, is linked to greater anxiety, depression, stress, and political polarization.
  • Many people are limiting apps, reading summaries, or avoiding videos to cope, but consistent news avoidance is more common among young people, women, and lower socioeconomic groups, raising concerns about political disengagement.

Science research gets more engagement on Bluesky than X, study finds
  • Bluesky, launched in 2023 and now with 38M users, has become a hub for researchers seeking constructive, troll-free conversations, with many scientists migrating from X due to falling engagement and rising misinformation.
  • A study of 2.6M Bluesky posts referencing 500,000+ scholarly articles found higher engagement and originality than on X: nearly half of posts got 10+ likes and a third 10+ reposts, compared with just 4.4% on X.
  • Scientific discussion on Bluesky surged in 2024, with August seeing twice as many science posts per day as July and over three times March’s volume; engagement remains strong despite overall user activity declining since autumn 2024.
