This Is What Will Ruin Public Opinion Polling for Good
  • Companies are using large language models to mimic human survey answers, producing fast and cheap “polls” but these are not based on actual human opinions, undermining the core purpose of public opinion research.
  • Because these models rely on past data and assumptions, they risk reflecting the pollster’s own biases even more strongly than traditional methods, turning speculative outputs into seemingly authoritative “facts.”
  • How to check if a poll is legit: Look for transparency about methodology (real respondents vs. AI simulation), sample size and demographics, margin of error, and who conducted/funded the poll. Credible polls clearly state they surveyed real people; vague language like “modeled,” “simulated,” or “synthetic data” is a red flag.
