It's
85 Seconds to Midnight

|
Today, the Bulletin of Atomic
Scientists set the Annual
Doomsday Clock to 85 seconds to
midnight.
Climate change, authoritarianism,
unregulated artificial
intelligence, and an extremely
destabilizing series of
decisions regarding nuclear
weapons led the Bulletin to move
the clock forward.
"As we publish this statement,
the last major agreement
limiting the numbers of
strategic nuclear weapons
deployed by the United States
and Russia, New START, is set to
expire, ending nearly 60 years
of efforts to constrain nuclear
competition between the world’s
two largest nuclear countries."

Turning
Back the Clock on Nuclear Limits
Expiration
|
Activists in Spokane, Seattle,
Bellingham, Tacoma, and Olympia
are taking action to sound the
alarm on the Feb. 5 expiration
of the NewStart treaty. The
treaty is the only major
remaining agreement limiting
the numbers of strategic nuclear
weapons deployed by the United
States and Russia. Through
billboards, petitions, signs,
and visits to congressional
offices, concerned
Washingtonians and our
anti-nuclear coalition are
doing all we can to alert the
public and move our leaders to
action.

|
|
We urge you to join us. Go to nwanw.org/NewStart
to contact
your members of Congress.
And please call them and do
whatever you can to keep the
freeze on nuclear weapons
deployments. One great option is
to join us for a
New
START Action Hour,
Tuesday, Feb 3 at 9:00 am
Pacific time with special
guest US Sen. Ed Markey to
call in and demand that our
members of Congress speak out!
If you are able to join us, please
email us for details.

New
Poll Shows Voters Want Caps on
Nukes
|
Good news! When the public is
informed, they are on our side.
A new poll sponsored by the
Nuclear Threat Initiative showed
that "an overwhelming majority
of Americans (91 percent) say
the United States should
negotiate a new agreement with
Russia to either maintain
current limits on nuclear
weapons or further reduce both
countries’ arsenals." Read

Earth's
Greatest Enemy Screening
(Seattle)
|
On February 4th, we invite
supporters in the Seattle area
to a screening of the new film
"Earth's Greatest Enemy" with a
Q & A from the film's
director, Abby Martin. The film
centers around the environmental
consequences of war and rampant
militarism led by the United
States.
The United States military is
the world's largest
institutional polluter, and by
far the largest discretionary
source of federal spending. In
2026, the annual US military
budget exceeded $1 trillion for
the first time in history. There
will be an additional
opportunity to view the film at
the UW on February 3rd. You can
find tickets here.
