Here’s what we are up to. In
2025 we launched this
letter to Congress in
support of BftB’s
congressional resolutions —
H. Res. 317 and S. Res. 323.
The letter has already been
signed by about 150 mayors,
city/town councilors, county
commissioners, and state
legislators. We hope to get
many more officials to sign
the letter before we release
it in late March or early
April. The Doomsday Clock
announcement always gets
lots of attention so we
think this is an ideal time
to make calls.
Why local/state
officials?
You’re going to be hearing
the word “leadership” from
us a lot. The letter is
about our ongoing efforts to
get many more members of
Congress to step up and show
real disarmament leadership.
And in order to get them to
act, we – and those who
represent us locally – need
to also step up and shout
from the rooftops that
“Nuclear Weapons Are a Local
Issue” and “We Demand
Leadership” (there’s that
word again). This is all
about building a broad,
vocal and powerful
nationwide constituency
demanding leadership and
action toward a world free
of nuclear weapons.
How Will The Phone
Bank Work?
We are going to make this
very easy for everyone with
draft scripts, lists to
call, team members on hand
to answer questions and a
quick briefing/walk through
before we all start making
calls. It’s up to you to
decide how many calls you
want to make or how long you
want to participate. We’ll
do our best to provide you
with lists of officials who
represent you so you can be
calling them as a
constituent.

There’s a lot of very
disturbing things going on
in the country and the world
right now. We as activists
and folks concerned about
democracy, the rule of law
and protecting our fellow
community members are being
pulled in so many
directions. Preventing
nuclear war is an equally
urgent concern and thus
demands some of our time and
attention — particularly
right now with only weeks
before New START expires,
the last remaining US-Russia
nuclear arms control treaty,
as well as President Trump’s
threat to resume nuclear
explosive testing and his
recently announced plan to
propose a $1.5 trillion
annual military budget.
