Eric Stinton: Hawaiʻi Is In The Crosshairs Of A Dangerous Nuclear Policy

Good article.  A few points:

Invoking the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War – a group of doctors which won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1985 – as well as the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs, Granoff answered the question, How can you protect yourself from nuclear explosions: “They all agree: you can’t do anything.”

“In less than 1/1000th of a second, the heat of a nuclear bomb will be three times the heat on the face of the sun. Within 100 miles there will be winds of 600 mph, a fireball will be created that will evaporate everything in that range. The bomb used at Hiroshima was 15 kilotons, 15,000 tons of TNT. Now we have bombs in the megaton range, a million tons of TNT. We’re talking about immeasurable suffering, immeasurable destruction. There is no defense. There is no place you can hide.”

Stanford professor Scott Sagan outlined five principles to make nuclear policy “more just and effective:” prohibit the use of nuclear weapons against civilians;

--never use nuclear weapons against a target that can be destroyed by conventional weapons;

--don’t use nuclear weapons in response to enemy attacks against our own civilian populations;

--don’t use nuclear attacks as a response to biological or cyber attacks;

--work in good faith toward eventual nuclear disarmament.

And pray to the Gods for "Good Luck" against the war mongers of the world. (Ann's comment)

Very few people are aware of Hawaii's nuclear contamination (plutonium) from atmospheric testing. Other nuclear contamination in Hawaii includes several thousand 55 gal drums of radioactive solid waste dumped off Oahu's southern shores from refueling nuclear subs at Pearl Harbor decades back.  Millions of gallons of radioactive waste have also been dumped into Pearl Harbor, and there have been reports of nuclear weapon accidents on Oahu back in the 60s and 70s where radiation was released.  These events are noted on pages 17-34 of the book "The Dark Side of Paradise -- Hawaii in a Nuclear World" which can be downloaded for free on the right side of our homepage on our website www.malu-aina.org

Plutonium fallout found in soil especially on the windward side of Hawaii Island, and likely other islands too, from atmospheric testing has gotten very little attention!

Plutonium fallout from atmospheric testing -- US Atomic Energy Commission study.  The US tested 12 nuclear weapons in the atmosphere at Johnston atoll, several hundred miles south west of Hawaii. Two additional weapons test blew up on the launch pad.

Some of the tests lighting up the sky at night could be seen from Oahu.  On at least one occasion, the electromagnetic pulse from the blasts caused the street lights to go out in Honolulu.

The upper jet stream winds travel west to east and the high rainfall appears to have brought the plutonium fallout down.  Papaikou on the Big Island had the highest rainfall of any site tested north or south latitude, and had the highest level of Plutonium fallout.

See page 10 on the full report at the link below that lists Papaikou on Hawaii island as the highest reading of Plutonium contamination of any place in the world tested.

Instead of the lengthy full report at the above link, below is link to a summary article published in Nature Magazine in 1973.

  • Published: 16 February 1973 in Nature Magazine shows soil sample taken at Papaikou on Hawaii Island to have the highest level of plutonium 239 of any place sampled north and south latitude.

Global Inventory and Distribution of Fallout Plutonium

Abstract

PLUTONIUM isotopes, Pu-239,240 and Pu-238 in particular, have been injected into the stratosphere as a result of atmospheric nuclear weapons tests, and have reached the ground as particulate fallout. An accidental stratospheric injection of Pu-238 in 1964 resulted in almost a three-fold increase in the global fallout of this isotope, and we now describe the accumulated fallout and geographical distribution from this unexpected release as well as from weapons testing.
